This is a surprise to me especially this late in the year Click Here (espn.go.com). Del Rio has done this before with Leftwich, but this is a year that Del Rio really needs and with Manning looking like he is going to miss some time I think I would take my chances with the spotty Garrard over McCown/Gabbert combo.

I like the Titans chances in the AFC South a little bit more now.

Maurice Jones-Drew will be even more important now than even before. I expect him to have 50 carries a game.

I think they wanted to actually limit his carries more this year, keeping him fresh and healthy as the season wore on. That may have changed with his primary back-up going on IR, but I expect Deji Karim and Greg Jones to pick up the slack.

BigDaddyLoco made the point I immediately thought of when I heard the news...JDR was pretty much given the "playoffs or else" edict from the owner, and now, after the Jags' first round pick was used for the future, the starting QB is now cut. I really wonder how much JDR was in favor of this move. It does remind me of the Leftwich situation, but having David Garrard ready to step in is a little different than having Luke McCown starting.

Garrard is spotty, but he has flashes of strength. Even if you don't want him to start, cutting him seems purely an economic decision. There are a number of teams who wouldn't mind grabbing him. Especially if the teams are playing Jacksonville early on.

Garrard will have a job by the end of the week. Can't believe the Jaguars just cut him outright. Garrard on, say, the 49ers (hint hint, San Francisco management) makes that team a contender.

Keep him in the division and let Polian hire him to be Collins' backup in Indy.

Supposedly, one of the straws that broke the camel's back was Garrard going off on his O-line on the sideline. If that's true, he wouldn't last two weeks in Indy.

It'll be after the week 1 games are played. If he's signed before the regular season kicks off, then teams are on the hook for his entire salary ... by signing after week 1, he can be cut (again) should his new team choose to do so w/o a big financial hit.

This is the thing I don't understand. I know they save $8 million on Gerrard not paying them, but isn't there a tight salary floor in the new CBA? I can't find any updated place with the team salary info (probably coming in the next few days), but the Jaguars seem like a team that might be close to the salary floor previously, and will have to pay out some extra money anyway.

My understanding is that the floor doesn't exist this year.

As of August 29, ProFootballTalk said the Jags had $28MM of cap space.

That's weird. In all the articles and Tweets I've read on the Garrard saga (and as a Jags fan, I've read many), this is the first I've heard of this.

Understandable, as it's buried in the original article.

Garrard's final game was one of his worst. He was hit repeatedly in last week's preseason finale against St. Louis and misfired on four of five passes. He ended the night with an animated exchange with his offensive line on the sideline.

That, too, had become an issue inside the facility, with Garrard pointing the finger more often than taking the blame.

Seems fair to me, and even as a Bears fan, I would have felt anything less than 4 games was a bad precedent for the initiative.
