Forget a player just dying like this...when do people in their physical prime EVER just die in their sleep? I am almost afraid to find out the cause.
Unbelievable...
My prayers and thoughts go out to his family.
On the fantasy note, he's on one of my teams...purely for roster space, I should release him, but even the thought of doing that makes me feel guilty. Any thoughts on what you'd do?

I don't recall the last time a big name player died during the regular season. I know that guy who used to play third for the Braves, Tony Oliva died a couple years back. And the Indians of course lost the three pitchers in that boating accident... But it's always startling news.
And to the person who didn't want to drop him from their fantasy team - I already did. I realize it's just a game - but the game goes on as does life.

Current reports are saying that Kile died in his sleep of "natural causes"

A similar problem claimed the life of one of the kids in my high school graduating class, so I don't think it's steroid-related. Just an immense tragedy for his family and the Cards.

It might not be because of drug use (I'm looking beyond steriods as well when thinking about this tragedy), but the wrestling fan in me who has seen numerous incidents like this in wrestling, especially with the term "natural causes" used makes me think some type of drug was involved.

| #9 Posted on 22.6.02 2337.45 | Wow... this is an absolute shock to me as well. I honestly do hope it's of some kind of natural, non-drug-induced death. Hope that Palpatine is on the right track about the blood clot thing - although hoping that's how somebody died strikes me as just odd....
BDC, I understand your situation, he's on my team as well. While releasing him probably wouldn't affect me at all - I'm languishing (and I do mean languishing) in last, but I probably still will have to release him... maybe there's some way I can put him on the DL the rest of the year.
To Phil, Munson died via plane crash, so it's not entirely the same situation.
My condolences go out to Kile's family, and the Cardinals organization.

* Prelim autopsy shows natural causes, with 3 of his arteries being 80% clogged. (or something similar. You get the point)
* Tonight's game at Wrigley (starting minutes from now) will no frills. No scores on the scoreboard, no music, no announcements (except batters and pitchers).
Munson was the last player to die during the season. Don Baylor talked today about how the Angels coped with the death of Lymon Bostock in 1978 (I believe).

For them to build up SO MUCH steam in the pitching department after struggling with it for so long only to have part of it yanked out from underneath them (as well as Jack Buck's death) so quickly and so shockingly is a blow that takes a long time to recover from. An injury is one thing. Losing a beloved teammate forever is another.

The worst part about it, though, was there was nothing they could do. No symptoms beforehand, family history... that's about half of these cases. Just hope no one goes off on them finding a small amount of what they believe to be pot in there... | haz

Not unusual for a pitcher who throws as hard as Kile did. No doc in the world would question that his shoulder pain was due to pitching, especially since he had surgery on his right shoulder in the offseason...

| #20 Posted on 25.6.02 1703.39 | I also heard a lot of talk this morning about the police finding what may be a small bag of marijuana in his hotel bathroom. I have a feeling the commisioner's office is going to use that to try and push for mandatory drug testing which will lead to a strike unfortunately. I had just gotten back into enjoying baseball again after many years so I really hope this doesn't develop that way. It would be a a tragedy for Kile's death to inadvertantly lead to a strike b\c years from now that would be all it was remembered for. Not for the man and athlete himself.
