I only followed this via the GameCast on ESPN.com, but apparently he made it through 27 batters with no hits and no walks, but Julio Lugo made an error in the sixth, so that only got him to two outs in the ninth, at which point Shannon Stewart got a single to cost him the no-no.

Harsh.

    Harsh.

I like Schilling's quote after the game:

"We get 2 outs, and I was sure, and I had a plan, and I shook Tek (catcher Jason Varitek) off. And I get a big 'what if?' for the rest of my life" ESPN notes that Pedro Martinez took a no-no into the 9th vs. Tampa Bay in 2000, shook Tek off, and gave up a hit on that pitch as well, so the moral is, if you're throwing a no-hitter, and Varitek's catching, don't shake off the damn signs.

It's kind of like getting through 9 with a no-hitter, and losing it in extra innings, I guess. Really, a no-hitter's the one thing that Schilling hasn't done in his career, so it would have been nice to get one, but they did win the game.

He needs to win a Cy Young before we say a no-hitter is the one thing he hasn't done. 300 wins would be nice too and he's nowhere near that.

He got the win, ended the losing streak, and reestablished the division lead in double digits. Taking days off the schedule and keep me from getting paranoid about an historic collapse are what concerns me now.
Now, onto the other Sox. The Sons of Ozzie Guillen seem to have taken Roberto Duran as their collective role model, as No Mas seems to be their mantra for the season. Can't hit to save their lives, and their bullpen is Tampa without the closer available putrid. And this is actually me being more pissed off about the White Sox losing 3 out of 4 last weekend against the Blue Jays than their dropping 3 of 4 to the Yankees, as by the time the Toronto series was mercifully over they looked like a dead team.

"You told him I was throwing a deuce, didn't you...?"

"Yup. Man, that thing got out of here in a hurry! You figure anything that travels that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it!"

Yeah, it wasn't a home run, and Varitek may not have told the guy the pitch, but the lesson from Bull Durham-- don't shake off your catcher-- is a lesson well-learned.
