The Rocket replaces Zito. Good to have someone with a vested interest in this home-field advantage stipulation getting involved. Not that Benitez and that guy from Tampa Bay aren't trying just as hard to win.
This home-field thing is more than a cheap gimmick. The last 20 years of World Series game 7s have been decided by homefield. It is very important.

So the question is: Do Boston fans root for Clemens to win knowing it'd give them home-field advantage in the series? Or do they take the defeatist role and assume that even if they make it to the series with home-field they'd still find a way to choke? Do they support Manny blowing off the game to chill out in Miami.

I'd like to see a win for Clemens, a loss for Benitez, a stolen base for Soriano, and a HR derby win for Giambi. The last one looks the most likely now that Bonds and Sosa bowed out once they heard they couldn't use corked bats in the derby.

Can you feel the love tonight?

No because Clemens doesn't deserve to be there. Nor does Zito deserve to get shit on like this either. Willis pitched yesterday, but nobody is suggesting he stay home. Hell, Toronto folks don't want Halladay to pitch, but he's still on the team.

This all smells like a rat.

I think if someone had bothered to inform last year's AL Cy Young award winner that he was off the team before being informed by the media, I'd have less of a problem with it. They couldn't have shipped off anyone else? As Grimis said, haven't Torontians (that what they're called?) been wanting Halladay not to pitch in the game? Just saying.

With that being said.... wonder if he can get nailed by a comebacker.

(Of course, I'd love it if Clemens came in with a chance to win, got runners on base, gets pulled, next guy in - boom! 1 pitch, grand slam. So wonderful. )

As for home-field advantage, I believe that baseball didn't need to throw that in all of a sudden after they ran out of pitchers last year. (As of now, Zito's been to 2 All-Star games, and faced 1 batter. Does that seem odd to anyone else?) If you have an innings limit for pitchers, fine, but use them all the way up. 6 SP, 6 RP? Should be able to go 18, at least. No need for situational guys. When it comes down to Mike Williams against Dimitri Young... man, I hope I'm wrong about that, but there will be some bitching if that determines homefield.

I hope it does come to that. Maybe someone will see how ridiculous this is. In all likelihood though, Prior will be the last guy out of the pen for the NL, if he plays at all.

It is too bad that MLB and the Players Association allowed FOX to have too much say in the matter. Listening to the Dan Patrick Radio Show this morning, I think they had like seven or eight current and former big leaguers, and none of them thought this was a good idea. Exactly what would be wrong with having the best record determine homefield advandtage throughout the playoffs? It's worked out ok for the NBA, NFL, and NHL. It also makes a helluva lot more sense. Or maybe thats the problem.

Cow, I hope that your Clemens scenario happens, both as a fan of the NL, and as an unabashed Clemens hater.

Skorpio, do you make broad, general, inaccurate statements on purpose, just to piss people off and get a reaction, or do you just not think? This isn't so much about this particular thread as it is a question in general.

Notes from tonight:

A.) I'm not against giving fat Roger a place in the All Star Game. I am against shitting on Zito. Bad form, fellas.

B.) Fuck Wade Boggs for wearing a Yanks jersey tonight in the Celebirty/All-Star softball game. Go to hell, Wade. The man played twice as long and had all his greatest seasons in Boston, and he wears the Yankees jersey. Hot damn. Suck a polar bear's nasty asshole, Mr. Boggs.

Uh, Oakland doesn't have a shot at the World Series?

It could be worse: he could've worn a Tampa Bay jersey. And Margo looks nothing like a polar bear ;)

"Fuck Wade Boggs for wearing a Yanks jersey tonight in the Celebirty/All-Star softball game."

... Between Clemens and Boggs, one has to wonder what Red Sox fans have done to the Baseball Gods to deserve such morally bankrupt and despicable turncoats as these two to come out of the Sox farm system in the 1980's. Between that and enduring the everlasting stupidity of managers like McNamara, Morgan, and Williams -- it's not hard to believe the Sox truly ARE cursed.

Enough of the Wade Boggs jersey. The biggest bullshit last night was screwing Giambi out of the HR title I predicted to win. He had 12 Homeruns in the first round and 11 in the second round. Yet somehow, he gets jobbed to Garrett Andersen who had 7 in the first and 6 in the second. Giambi hit nearly twice as many homeruns and got royaly screwed. Bullfuckinshit.

And the AL manager had the right idea. If you can't play don't show up. No point in having useless arms on the bench.

Anybody who roots against Clemens tonight is not a true fan of the American League.

Oh come on....that's what's it's like being in a tournament. You have to win each individual game. Saying that Giambi got screwed is absoltely ridiculous.

Oh...and fuck the Yankees.

Red Sox FANS, nothing. The Red Sox TEAM, maybe quite a bit. From being the last team in baseball to integrate to giving away guys like Cecil Cooper and Ben Oglivie to giving away guys like Jeff Bagwell, the TEAM maybe deserves what it gets.

Apparently Giambi and Pujols didn't learn from Sammy that you shouldn't gas yourself out in the early rounds...

And why the heck wasn't Gagne pulled, you could see on the first pitch he didn't have it as usual. Of course, Woody and Wagner had to let them think they could come back after Hasegawa imploded...

If I'm the Dodgers, I'm glad Gagne got it out of his system when it wasn't quite as important...

Cooper and Oglivie...ah, memories. Oh, and include me in the "F*ck the Yankees" club. Brewers fans HAVE NOT forgotten the 1981 split-season thing and the bastardness of Billy Martin, bah gawd!

(Hell, of course we remember...it's the last time our team was any good.)

Here's MLB/Selig's response to that (taken from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel):

Critics of the new all-star format insist that home-field advantage in the World Series should go to the team with the best record but Selig said that would be impossible logistically to implement.

"It's not pragmatic," Selig said. "We need 10,000 to 12,000 hotel rooms and other things. We can't do that on 24 hours' notice."

[back to me]
Except, that's exactly what you have to do every year, considering you can't reserve the rooms until a team wins the LCS, anyway!

Doesn't the NBA/NHL have this same problem as well? Enlighten me.

No, they don't have Bud Seilig as commissioner **rimshot**

Yes, they have the team with the best regular season record hosting the Finals.

I'm referring more to the hotel room/travel crunch that is going to propose such a problem for MLB.

(EDIT: Oops.)

Well, I'm glad that Hank Blalock managed to determine who gets homefield advantage in the World Series. Not that I have anything against him - great young player. It's ...well... you know.

And if Selig already knows where to rent the hotels for the World Series..... sounds like he's already got the rest of the season pre-planned.
