I believe Choi got a bit of a raw deal last year, as Dusty likes his veterans. Lee, however, is a proven commodity, and a good sign the Tribune company is willing to shell out some bucks to get over the hump next year.| Promote this thread! | | geemoney

As for the Marlins - Jeff Conine can't play for much longer ... Choi gives them a good option at 1B which they might not have gotten otherwise. At least, the article I read on ESPN said that the O's and Marlins couldn't agree on the players the O's would give up. I don't think that'll help your mood any, but just food for thought.

Yeah- I heard the O's didn't want to include P Matt Riley in the deal. I assume Choi will keep 1B warm til Stokes gets called up in a few years. | Grimis

I know Lee was in town Monday trying to work on a contract extension. But I'm not going to pass judgment on the O's not getting him until we figure out the contract negotiations. If they lowballed him on the contract, I'm going to be pissed.
But Riley would be too good to trade if we could't keep Lee more than one year.

They get rid of Lee to free up the money to try to help the cause of re-signing their other guys...they use a Choi/Conine platoon for this year as a stopgap and then hope Adrian Rodriguez is ready to play 1B in 2005.
It's that last part that's the biggest leap of faith though.

1. It's Adrian Gonzalez, not Rodriguez. 2. He was traded to Texas last season in the Urbina deal. Stokes is the Marlins 1B of the future. |
