I think we were too soon.

    One week.

I am quite sure I will be in the minority on this one, but since I am for most of you like an older brother (wink, wink), I'll answer anyway.

You should wait until after your married. I may get some agreement on this, but I am betting nobody would say it first because that wouldn't be cool or macho. I don't care if you think I'm square and unhip, you should wait. Period.

I still think you're KEWL, Dad pieman! (I'm guessing you would NOT have ended up with "the Playboy" on the OKCupid quiz, though.)

Waiting = Good. Even if you dont wait until you're married (Even though you should), I say at least wait until you're certain that you & your partner are on the same page emotionally. Not just in terms of sane-ness (cause that's important, too), but in terms of feeling the same way about each other. Sleeping with someone who is way more into you than you are into them or vice-versa (no pun intended) is only gonna get one of you hurt real bad. And the best way to ensure that everyone is on the same page is to WAIT. Please believe it.

Definitely. If you want to wait you should. If she wants to wait, you should be happy and wait for her to be ready. BUT, if neither one of you wants to wait, AND you both are in the same place (whether it's a one-stand or the first time in an intended long-term relationship) I REALLY don't see why waiting is the thing to do.

Why SHOULD you? I'd rather see a couple wait to get married, honestly. Having sex can be about two horny people being alone together and wanting to DO IT.

I agree with this, but I also believe two people who just met can be on this "same page".

100% total agreement here.

Or you could, you know, TALK ABOUT IT, too.

I think it's VITALLY important to be on the same page with the other person in the relationship, because the worst thing IS when two people are together and one think they are getting something (emotionally) that the other person isn't giving, but I think drawing a line and saying you shouldn't have sex is silly.

I understand the point that everyone makes when they say to wait till marriage, but to me a marriage certificate is just some piece of paper the justice of the peace signs to let my future ex-wife take half my stuff.

I can't wait till marriage because, honestly, I have dumped a couple gals just because we were incompatible in bed. Do I put too much importance in sex? Probably. But it is big enough to bother me if we aren't compatible in that regard.

I'm thinking that I'm way more emotionally into her than vice-versa. I guess my plan is to just hang back and keep my distance, in all ways, to make sure I don't get hurt.

That's really a sad commentary. I am truly sorry if you feel that way.

Divorced? No.

But I'm very non religious. So a marriage doesn't really mean much to me. I see it as a very religious ceremony.

Just a relationship question to throw out to everyone.

How soon is too soon to be hopping into the sack? How long, on average, did you and your significant other wait until you two finally crossed that line?

I've been in 3 major relationships...

Girlfriend #1: I don't remember exactly, so I'll throw out something ridiculous like 20 months. We were in high school, and dated for JUST under 2 years. We were young, fooled around ALL the time, but for whatever reason simply could not pull the trigger because for her it had to be "perfect". Ultimately, I think the frustration on both our ends went a long way in ending it.

Girlfriend #2: 5 days. She was a friend for a year before we started dating. It would have been sooner, but we were working all week at college, and had to wait until the weekend to get in some decent alone time. We wound up having a very healthy, wonderful relationship. To this day I'm still pissed at myself for the fact it did not work out, but she remains my best friend.

Girlfriend #3: 4 days. Again, same scenario as previous one, likely would have been sooner if we had got some alone time. However, UNLIKE the previous one, I had only MET this one the 4 days earlier. I don't know really what prompted me to do that so quick, other than I wanted it, she wanted it, so we did. To be honest I think THAT is the most important aspect of sexual relationships. Do YOU want to do it? If you're not comfortable, then you don't. If you are, and it feels good, do it.

I'm still in my sexual peak, which is likely why I'm not huge on waiting. For some people, it's a deeply moving emotional experience. For me, it's more the feeling you get - and while it won't make the relationship a winner, I need the compatibility in bed. Girlfriend #3 and I had some major differences of what each liked (she was a tad too kinky for me) - and we would not have learned that had we not had sex on a regular basis.

Waiting might be good for some...but not for me. It's too important in a relationship.

I hope this makes sense. I'm barely aware and rambling.

I think we were too soon.

    One week.
But we're very interested in each other. She was molested by her grandfather, who also molested her mother, and to her sex and love are separate. Sex is no big whoop. It would be like shaking hands. Luckily, she's loyal to whomever she's dating.

I just hope she doesn't have too much baggage. She warned me that she just joined the site just for fun and never expected a reply. She doesn't even know if she wants to hop back into a relationship.

In December she kicked out her live-in boyfriend of 3.5 years. She doesn't know if she wants me, one friend she had the hots for, or just stay single. At least I'm getting some PROTECTED action. I'm just going to go into this as just friends with benefits and see where it goes.

Jeebus, dude, is this sensitive info really something you wanna share with the world...and worse yet, the IWC? Is she gonna kick your ass if she finds out you told us all this?

I'm going to pick on you this time, Chris. Sorry. My fatherly responsibilities will be taking over now.

Contraception is not 100% reliable. So, you wanted to have sex? Are you willing to raise a child in a two parent home if the contraception fails? If more people actually thought about how their life (or a baby's) might be affected for your few minutes of lustful good times, there would be a whole lot less children without parents.

Only if you finally share your user name with the W

A group of my friends and I spent a long time last night discussing the timing thing. And to give the very easy answer to the situation, I have to go with the right time is when both parties feel ready to do that with each other. And I know Pieman's point is valid, but you can't live making every choice based on percentages that small, or you're going to be cutting a lot of things from your lifestyle. Yes something could happen, but then driving to meet your girl has a good chance of something happening that ruins your life as well. Be careful, take all the precautions you can (perhaps encourage the young lady to use contraception?) and have fun.

Yes but you also can't be 100% sure a man in a green Santa suit isn't going to climb down your chimney and axe murder you.

Are you willing to raise a child in a two parent home if the contraception fails?

Sure. I doubt my parents would mind if I raised a child in their home. (Watch as Pieman's head explodes....)

I suppose it wouldn't help things out any if I pointed out that she already has a very sweet 2 year old daughter? (Probably not, I feel the temperature rising!)

If more people actually thought about how their life (or a baby's) might be affected for your few minutes of lustful good times, there would be a whole lot less children without parents.

I understand that point - but that said, going to work this morning I could get run over by a bus. Should I avoid going to work and making money? I've never been naive enough not to think about the consequences of my actions. I've made some mistakes and I'll own up to them, but my sex life isn't something I'll ever feel guilty about. I've made my choices with a level head (insert "WHICH HEAD?" joke) - and am comfortable with what I do. Should something ever actually happen, I may be 22, but I know even if doing it alone I'd be one helluva daddy. I was good with Keira (#3's daughter), and while Weekend Daddy's not the same thing as Full Time Daddy I'm confident should I have to walk that road I'll be fine.

Not everyone may be in the same boat, but I'm a very paternal kinda guy. I need to stop being mushy, or I'll wind up going out and knocking up someone just so I CAN have one.

EDIT: And the above part about my parents is 100% me Trying To Be Cute. I have lived alone for 5 years, and they don't want me back. My dad's hair stopped falling out after I left...but perhaps that's because he has none left.

Here's a happy story. Almost ten years ago I hopped in the sack with a guy after dating him for 3 weeks. He's been Mr. Tomboy for 5 years and we're expecting our first baby this August. Some people wait longer, some less, some until they're married. The point is, do what you want, when you want to, and how you want to. You're both individuals and you'll figure it out just fine as you go along...even if it's a little bumpy at times.

IMHO, it depends on what you want from the relationship. If it's something you think might have a chance of lasting and being significant, then I think you should take it pretty slow. Work up to it.

If it's simply about sex (which happens and is OK) then why wait?

However, the fact that you said, "I think we were too soon," is telling. Maybe you answered your own question.

I guess it depends on how you and your partner view sex. If you both believe you can have sex and not be "invested" in each other....just a casual romp....then I would guess it wasn't too soon.

But if by having sex one (or both) of you feel more invested in the relationship than you would have otherwise, that's when problems can start because of it (speaks from experience).
