I must be completely out of the loop. During a Smackdown involving Kurt Angle, Edge, and Booker T, Angle wanted to sound more hip. So he used the phrase "I'm crisp, clean, and no caffeine, yo." I honestly never heard that phrase before. Then yesterday in my Marketing class, I read about Promotion and 7up. Right next to it, is that phrase. The problem is I've never heard them use it, I've always heard them use 7up-the UNcola or Make 7-up Yours. So when did they use the "Crisp, Clean, and No Caffeine" for their slogan?

I'm thinking the early 80's, when "no caffene" became the rage and Coke and Pepsi were debuting caffene-free variants.

In fact, 7-Up's website has a "no caffene" marketing mention under "1982".

As a child of the seventies, I vividly remember Geoffrey Holder as "large scary black man with deep voice.....in white Tropical suit." His actual catchphrase was "Ha ha haaaaaaa."

I tried and tried to find a wav file for you but came up empty.

To possibly help you place the man (and further add needless trivia to the thread) he played Punjab in the film version of the broadway musical "Annie."

Prior to this, btw (as the child of an advertising man) 7UP's slogan and campaign was "The Uncola." As a promotional item, they gave out drinking glasses that were basically the stylized Coca-Cola glasses (Big wide mouth, fluted bottom) upside down.

Geoffrey Holder was also in the first Roger Moore James Bond movie "Live and Let Die."

He was the Voodoo Chief, dressed similarly to his later commercial work, with white tuxedo. Of course, he didn't have the Papa Shango skull make-up in the 7up commercials. :>

I remember the slogan went: "Don't you feel, good about [hahaha ha], 7-up".
Crisp and clean must have been around that time too.

They even had a tab collecting game where if you got CRISP, CLEAN, NO CAFFEINE you'd win a million dollars.

another silly slogan: "Introducing Diet Coke. You're gonna love it just for the taste of it."

And the Coke/Pepsi Taste Test in the shopping malls..hee

Anybody else remember the old Batman Diet Coke commercial from 1990? I mean, I have the Batman movie VHS and it has the commercial before the feature...

"Just for the taste of it...Diet Coke!" "Ah!"

And the creepy Batman capes on all the cans... Walks a fine line between "cool" and "ahh!"

Holden: Judging by the buzz, that movie's gonna make some serious bank.
Jay: What buzz?
Holden: The internet buzz.

Yeah, the 7-Up Uncola spokesman was Baron Samedi, Lord of Cemeteries and Crossroads, from "Live and Let Die". Far and away the best Evil Soft Drink Spokesperson of all time. I wish they'd bring him back to kill the new 7-Up guy, perhaps in some voodoo-related dispute over the mysterious Uncola Nut.

I'm a Coca Cola shareholder but always buy 7UP probably because of Geoffrey Holder - he's got the best evil laugh in the business
