Interesting interview courtesy of the LA Times with the director, Shinichiro Watanabe. Figured I'd post it as a prelude to the movie's release and as a favour to my fellow CB fans on the board:

Umm...who the hell is Steven Jay Blum? David Lucas is English voice actor for Spike Spiegel in the series and movie. Is that an alias maybe, a stage name? I'm so confused.

http://us.imdb.com/Name?Blum,+Steven+(I) There's Blum's filmography on IMDB. Here's David Lucas':

http://us.imdb.com/Name?Lucas,%20David%20(I)

Anyone care to explain?

Anyway, you people HAVE to see this movie. In fact see it a million times, and hopefully those wacks at Sony will give this movie a WIDE release. You know this movie is only going to be on like 20 screens friday? C'mon, if you think spirited away was good, this blows everything out of the water. THIS is the event movie of the year. Not matrix, not hulk, not x2, not return of the king, the movie you will be talking about is COWBOY BEBOP

The author is 1000% correct. "Cowboy Bebop" is an anime movie for people who hate anime--hell it's better than most live action movies. That it's only being shown on 20 screen (You don't think Sony is STILL skittish because of the bioterrorism thing, huh?)is criminal. If you hate anime and you're lucky enough to see it on the screen, give it a chance. You'll love it.

The final battle on the tower ALONE is worth the price of admission.

On the David/Steven thing--one is the name he works under for union jobs, the other isn't [I think]

There's no reason sony should be skittish. Sum of all fears came out less than a year after 9/11 and it was a lame espionage thriller that made a mint. There have been other govt. terrorist movies since then as well. I think sony is really skittish b/c its animated and its very violent. but this movie is not anime, its FILM NOIR! NOT ANIME!

Enojada Viento, so are Steven Jay Blum and David Lucas one and the same?

Damn right, "Film Noir," not "anime." Gotcha. Whatever it is, anyone I've shown it to, likes it because it's "not that Pokemon bullshit."

Now, as to where I got this SJB/DL bit, I refer you to the following from Animenewsnetwork.com:

"Also of note, despite his continued attempts to seperate his union and non union pseudonyms, Steven Jay Blum has once again been identified in a major publication as the voice of Spike in both the TV series and the movie."

You can find their blurb containing this here--Click Here (animenewsnetwork.com)

Now now, Bizzle, let's not get irratonal. We're here to help.

It's not really French. It's what France wishes it could do--namely, kick ass every minute of every day from the time they roll out of bed.

To reach for a better definition, it, like the music style bebop, is its own thing. Yeah, that works.

That's the most moronic thing I've read since I followed a link and wound up at the soapbox site of one Charlie Daniels. Deciding you suddenly can't watch a movie because the name of the genre it falls in is French? Does that mean that you now hate the series, for the sole reason that it can be described using a French term?

Jeezus, you are pretty moronic too if you actually took that seriously. Just because I don't write cornball stuff like [sarcasm] ... [/sarcasm] between my words doesn't mean I'm being serious. By GAWD, lighten up man. The only thing that I'm dismayed by is that it's only 20 theatres, none of which are by me, and I am not aboot to go to NYC for anything.

Now, please excuse me while I head over to Charlie Daniels' website..

And in a late-breaking development. . .the reviews are pouring in:

For those who can't see it, here's a nutshell:

"New York Times
Lawrence van Gelder: "Take away the wit of its setting and the liveliness of its music, and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie...[is] unexceptional...among a long line of B-movies...familiar scenario...pales beside the tense reality of current events."

It's been said here before, but the New York Times may happily fuck off and die.

As must this champion of wit:

"Toronto Star
Peter Howell: "From its Dirty Harry beginning to its Blade Runner-meets-12 Monkeys plot, this is refried beens...of interest only to the fanboys who thrill to the stylish nihilism of bounty hunter Spike...and spank monkeys to the slutty vision of his sidekick Faye...doesn't have one-tenth of the vision or visual appeal of Spirited Away, the recent Oscar winner for animated features." (** of 4)

You tell me? Is he reviewing "Bebop" or flogging "Spirited Away?" (No disrespect to its fans but it's a good, tho majorly overrated movie)It won an Oscar so it must be good. . .

No disrespect to the Canucks on the board but um. . . Holmes don't get it.

You say something like that, on a message board, with no sign that it was anything but serious, and you're surprised that someone took it at face value? There's a reason why people use emoticons, man. Considering the hyper-conservative stuff I see you post in the Politics forum, it wasn't a terribly hard assumption to make.

But, hey, I was mistaken, what can I say. My bad.

Leave that blank(reason for leaving). Half the time, we don't ask and the other half probably only care if you were fired. When I've hired people, I don't really care that they quit a job as long as they don't make a habit of it.
