"Eh, i think the original point was that americans continue to take the piss/resent/hate (delete as applicable) the French while they have no grudge against the Germans. I dont think I'm being to harsh on Germany when I suggest that they were perhaps more responsible for the deaths of americans than france in WWII."

What is "take the piss"?

Anyway, I think one reason may be that we can respect the German pride and fighting spirit and military might, but people aren't going to give the same respect to "cheese eating surrender monkeys" (good one, groundskeeper willie).

Has the US ever liked cowards? Didn't they used to shoot each other in the old west for calling people 'yellow'?

With regards to the Soviet deaths during the war, do the statistics say how many were killed by the Germans and how many were killed by the Communinsts?

"Incidentally, in Britain we always thought the italians were the only army that returned home from wars with suntanned armpits. *ducks*"
Haha, this is a new one for me. I knew why their army wore brown pants, but never heard this one. Sort of along the lines of why the French planted trees along the Champs Elyse in the 1920's.

Anyway, kidding aside, in terms of "first to set foot in France" I'm guessing you're referring to the raid on Dieppe, where you guys did take quite a hit for the team (depite it being an utter failure), but it's not like you were the elite forces opening up Normandy for the rest of us. And I have no idea why "last to leave" France demonstrates anything other than incredibly poor taste.

"Not only did Americans die, but most of them happen to be Canadian?" Come on, "most?"

That's the WWII casualties by country. This shows two things:

    1) Even if you allow that 85% of the U.S. deaths occured in the Pacific (and none of the Canadians), there were still more American dead in Europe than Canadians. I will point out though, that a higher % of your troops were killed in combat.

    2) I really lowballed the 50% figure for the Russians. Not only did they provide more troops than the rest of the allies COMBINED, they also had more people killed or missing than everyone other country in the entire war...COMBINED. Diz-zamn.

I was not stating the losses were bigger by Canadians throughout the war, rather that of France only.

After looking at that report, it sickens me to see that close to 62 million people lots there lives during those 5 years.

So the Canadians don't think we were ignoring their contribution, I thought we were including them in the UK percentage for this argument due to the Commonwealth status. Since Canada was where the monarchy was going to flee if they left Britain, I included the Canadians with the British, Irish and Australians.

Germany and France are totally different. We joke about France more than Germany sure, the same way you joke about harmless inept criminal, not the one that actually is good at what he does.

Put it this way...I know people who still won't travel to Germany or buy a German car (granted, I live in the zip code with the highest percentage of holocaust survivors in the world). I'll admit that when I meet old German guys, I get fairly creeped out. I know of nobody (even those who genuinely don't like French people, and don't just kid around about it) who will refuse on principle to visit France or buy French products.

A very British synonym for "mocking," and one of my favorite phrases.

Sorry, I thought that had already winged its way across the water. I guess it's kinda like taking the mickey out of someone, just a bit more seriously. Fights stemming from alcohol in Scotland often start with the words "Dinnae take the piss oot ay me pal".

In more educated circles I have heard it referred to as extracting the urine.

I'm pretty sure both our countries used to make a point of shooting deserters as well didn't they? And Marty McFly sure didnt take kindly to chicken comments either.

Well, Rossi is ahead for now. The east coast papers had Gregorie up by 19 as the final count before those other votes were counted.
