Jeremy Schaap at ESPN reports that the pilot killed in the plane crash in Manhattan today was pitcher Cory Lidle.

I'm too stunned to say more here.

You wanted the best, you got... Out of Context Quote of the Week.

"They're plump, ripe, and priced to move. Get your fat Samoan today!" (Packman V2)

People are invoking Thurman Munson, but was that the same circumstance? Still, on behalf of one particular Red Sox fan, my condolences.

ESPN.com - MLB - Lidle's $1.5M death benefit in question

This is saying that if Lidle was piloting the plane, his family loses out on his death benefit, which would just be extremely classless on baseball's part. The family's going to have it hard enough having to go on without him without having to worry about funeral expenses and such. Besides, it's not like baseball's short on money anyway.

TEN YEARS AGO IN WRESTLING HISTORY: OCTOBER 1996
WWF: Mankind d. Undertaker in the first ever Buried Alive match at...WWF Buried Alive. Also, Steve Austin continued his efforts to bring Bret Hart back to the ring by turning on Brian Pillman, shattering his ankle in what to this day is known as "Pillmanizing".

WCW: Hulk Hogan d. Randy Savage in a main event no one cared about, but Roddy Piper came out immediately after to end Halloween Havoc with a bang. The Outsiders won their first WCW Tag Team titles by beating Harlem Heat.

1) Why would the MLB player's association have the clause in the plan if it's "wrong" to enforce it? Lidle knew the risk, and apparently decided to take it. While I can't confirm or deny baseball being short on money right now, I will say that if your assessment is true, they didn't reach that point by dishing out cash to everyone who wants it. It also wouldn't entitle anyone else to the money.

2) Besides, if I'm reading that right, his wife still gets $165,000 to $170,000 per year, with an additional $1.5 million in question. Not entirely sure on that though.

3) And let's not forget that Lidle has made millions of dollars already. If the $6.5 million he made this season alone is all already gone, well, it's his fault and his widow's problem.

It was a 2 year, $6.3 million contract.
USA Today has his earnings at $17.355 million over his career. I agree with you otherwise.

I am just glad to have been growing up during the time that he was not injury prone. Yes, he has expressed that he'd like to retire here in Seattle. If nothing else, he'd bump attendance numbers up for a team who will be younger by July.
