Today when I went to use my Xbox, I had to reach around the back of the TV and find the plug for the Xbox unit. The red button on the top (which looks like the "Test" button on Bathroom electrical outlets) had to be pushed in so that the Xbox would turn on.

I don't know that this means that I would have had a fire if I had been using the older recalled cord, if if my cat stepped on the yellow button to test the cord, but I thought I would share and remind anyone who didn't check to see if their unit was part of the recall that they may want to do so.

Perhaps a recall just saved me from a fire. Who will ever know?

My memory isn't so good, but I could have sworn that I read on one of those techhead-modify-your-XBox sites that the cord was only a small part of the problem and getting a replacement cord via the recall only reduced the threat of fire, not elimininated it.

I look forward to continuing to use my possible deathtrap because I just picked up Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks and DAMN if that isn't a fine 2-player game.

Yeah, you have to open up your xbox and re-solder the connections that the plug makes when it connects to the power supply. I did this with all but one of my Xboxes, and guess what happened to that one. Most of the time it will just short out and die (so I was lucky), but rarely you'll get a fire.

You know how when you push around the plug at the entry point of the Xbox, the black socket moves around? Well, that moving around eventually breaks the connection and then you're left with a 120 V prong that touches God knows what every once in a while. If you hear crackling when you push the plug around (gently) then you're probably in trouble.

I've also read that some people think that the new cord does nothing to reduce the risk of fire. Microsoft denied for the longest time that any fires ever took place (even during the first part of the recall, which made for some weird press releases...) so this might just have been a 'cover our ass' type of move.
