FYI - I "tried" Googling this and I'm hoping someone can help me find the "obvious" thing that I'm missing.

I have RoadRunner, my brother gave me his laptop to look at. Long story short, he's moving out and needs something to use for the internet. His laptop will serve fine, but it's on SP1 among other things. I figured on using my connection, just disconnected it from the desktop and connected it to the laptop. Everything "looks" fine, but no internet. The connections are there, but when I check ipconfig there is no DNS or Default gateway, just the IP address and the sub-net mask.

Any thoughts?

Fromt he sounds of it, you're auto-netting (you're probably getting a 169 as your IP address).

Most auto-netting can be resolved by doing a Power Cycle.

- Turn off the notebook and your desktop.
- Unplug the power adapter from your DSL/Cable modem.
- Wait 2 - 5 minutes.
- Plug the Cat-5 cable into the back of the notebook.
- Plug the power back into the DSL/Cable modem.
- Wait three minutes until it is fully initialized.
- Power up the notebook.

Volia, the internet should be there. When you call an ISP for tech support, it's the first thing they'll get you to do. Myself, I work for the maker of the computer itself, so I always wind up asking "did they get you to power cycle?". And depending on the answer, sometimes I may get them to do it again.

If that doesn't work, you can try to reset the winsock catalog as well. The problem with this is you have Service Pack 1, so there's a bunch of stuff to type ratehr than one command line (which is the case in SP2).

Try out the Power Cycle and see what happens.

If you have a CD from your ISP run that.
Have you tried doing a repair on the connection?
Or from the command line -
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew

That got it El Nastio! Thanks...I forgot that's what I had to do when I got my new PC...and what I'll probably have to do when I hook the desktop back up.

Thanks again!

I saw that. I'm wondering if there's a way to do a wholesale blocking of everything from a certain year or month, or even to have a rolling limit like blocking everything older than x years.
