My old computer is a P.O.S. and I need to get a new one. Everyone I know is telling me to go with a mac, but I know nothing about macs as I have been a PC guy my whole life. Can someone point me in the direction of a site or give me some info that might help me make a decision (for instance what kind of mac would be best for something like this)

It was over a decade ago and we've evolved, but the biggest mistake I made in my career was going with a MAC in 1995 because someone told me "it's so much easier to do graphics".

I have a friend who swears by it, although he is a programmer with the visual asthetics of Austin Powers. But he has done some pretty amazing stuff. Unfortunately, it's more of a scripting lanuguage than something like Maya - but it's free, open source, and fairly powerful once you get around the learning curve.

The problem is I am new to computer animation and have no idea what I will need for my new comp (I figured I would buy it with everything I will need up front instead of having to deal with the hassle later).

Just don't skimp on the RAM and you should be fine. I recommend you look at 512 megs minimum, and you should probably think about 1 gigabyte.
