Well, let's get the two big ones out of the way now...

SECRET INVASION #2: It's nice to have friends willing to take a bullet and pay for this, because it means I can be disgusted and not feel bad about it. Of course, this one wasn't actively bad and there weren't any eye-rolling Skrull reveals. Well, unless you count the Skrulls that came out of the spaceship in the last issue. But the big reveal involves a person who ISN'T a Skrull...

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Mockingbird, interrogated by Clint "Ronin" Barton himself

This person also reveals that the Captain America in the ship is supposedly the genuine article. Of course, that naturally means he ISN'T. No way Marvel opens THAT can of worms. Anyway, it was a decent read this time around, even if I'm still not in love with the concept. Thumbs in the middle, leaning up.

AVENGERS/INVADERS #1: This was a lot of fun! You get the requisite old-school WWII battle with the original Invaders, which reveals how they get to the present day, before the scene shifts to Spider-Man fighting off the Thunderbolts. This is the funniest Spidey's been since his "Avengers: Initiative" cameo, as the witty banter was spot-on. Tony Stark reacts to the Invaders invasion as you would expect. Stay tuned. Thumbs up!

And others...

MIGHTY AVENGERS #13: Nick Fury forms a ragtag group to fight off the Skrull invasion. And you know they'll win, because they're led by Nick F'n Fury. I'm getting more and more interested. Thumbs in the middle, leaning up.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1: I <3 Matt Fraction! The characterization of Stark and his reaction to the attack in Africa is eerily close to the film's version of Stark and it's great. Ezekiel Stane comes across a lot like Amadeus Cho, except EVIL! A great start and a good way to continue the "Iron Man" momentum. Thumbs up!

DETECTIVE COMICS #844: The big blowoff to the battle with the new Ventriloquist. We get more of her origin and a definitive end to Mr. Scarface (at least for now). Count me among the minority, but I loved the chemistry with Batman and Zatanna. Some iffy artwork (Dustin Nguyen gets downright sloppy at times) takes it down a notch, but not too much. Thumbs up!

ACTION COMICS ANNUAL #11: We FINALLY get the ending to the Johns/Donner Zod story. Johns hits Lex's character on the head, but still carries that obnoxious ego (as opposed to the fun ego) that he carries in the movies, which you KNOW is all Donner. It's an epic battle and still leaves the door open for more stories later. Kal-El will KNEEL BEFORE ZOD yet! Just like you should all kneel before this issue! Thumbs up!

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #14: In terms of humor, this issue's a breather after the hilarious last two issues. The story, however, moves along nicely and has a nice cliffhanger. Ok, the plot's a little wonky, but Dracula's presence more than makes up for it. Thumbs up!

ANGEL: AFTER THE FALL #7: And we FINALLY get some answers regarding Wesley, but my Spidey-Sense is tingling. His motivations are nice and all, but I have a feeling he's getting duped and he hasn't been portrayed as a dope in years. I'll be watching this plot point closely. The rest of it's forgettable, but notable for the return of Officer Kate Lockley (!) from Season 1! Thumbs in the middle.

Huh...pretty big week for the printed comic page.

Bullshit.

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
The death of Mockingbird a huge deal when it happened, and one of the best West Coast Avengers stories ever. And I'm not actually opposed to bringing her back from the dead, but this is an awful way to do it, because they've seen Mockingbird in Hell like three times. She was responsible for the Thunderbolts bringing Hellcat back to life, and now Hellcat's getting her own series. Do you think they're going to address that? Because it doesn't seem real likely to me. My only hope is that this is a big swerve.

Upon further thought, I actually agree with that "bullshit" call. That was not only a pretty definitive death, but also some definitive POST-DEATH appearances. Nice to know that it took Bendis TWO WHOLE ISSUES to renege on his "no retcon" promise. And if it DOES turn out to be a swerve, then he's created a hell of a plothole with the whole "October 12" thing.

Also upon further thought, take a drink every time you see an imitation of Jean Grey's Phoenix power. Um...it's the FUCKING PHOENIX! I would think that you really CAN'T imitate the type of power that can obliterate a freakin' universe, but there you have Skrulls waving it around like it's the simplest thing in the world! What a way to trivialize the Phoenix power.

Sigh...

A couple of things about that:

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
The entire premise for believing Mockingbird is real rests upon the assumption that Ronin/Hawkeye is real and was vetting her against information only the real Hawk and Mock would know. They could just as easily both be Skrulls and making up a story that Luke Cage and Wolverine can neither prove nor disprove. I doubt Ronin is a Skrull, but nothing in this scene eliminated the possibility and frankly if I won't be surprised if we see the Skrulls manufacturing similar "proofs" as this story continues.

Secret Invasion may yet be used to bring a few long-lost characters back, and if Mockingbird is one of them I think that's an intriguing choice. It does raise some questions about several old stories that hinged upon Mockingbird trying to help the Avengers from hell--if that wasn't Bobbi then who was it?--but those are questions that could be fun to answer so I don't object.

Well, the Skrulls seem to believe they're the genuine article, so if they imprinted the Skrull Bobbi with the real Bobbi's memories....

The Skrull crap isn't doing anything for me. I thumbed through the books at the shop but I'm not buying them... The MIGHTY AVENGERS issue, though, was pretty funny. What a crappy group of kids Fury collected there. It's like YOUNG AVENGERS, but shittier. It was funny that Layla turned them down.

AVENGERS/INVADERS is pretty good for a book that NO ONE has ever asked for, except Alex Ross. I like his take on characters because he ignores stupid crap like this Skrull nonsense and just writes what he wants to. I hope he does another 'X' title, like perhaps HELL X to go after PARADISE X.

INVINCIBLE IRON MAN was very entertaining as well. Normally, I can't stand Salvdore Larocca's art work, but here, it was hidden well underneath the coloring and looked very good. Is he getting BETTER, perhaps?

What did you miss...

RANN/THANAGAR HOLY WAR #1: You know, I think DC's space characters are not a good fit for Jim Starlin's writing. That or I just wish he'd go back to Marvel and do something with Thanos and Warlock again.

NOVA #13: Really cool cover depicting a promising fight between Nova and Silver Surfer... however, Silver Surfer was no where in this book. Shenanigans!

HOUSE OF MYSTERY #1: Hey, this was pretty good. It reads like the first season of LOST... but instead of an island, they are in the House Of Mystery. It's from Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges who are the two guys writing FABLES and JACK OF FABLES, so I'm giving it a chance. Nice art.

Forget it Josh... it's Cerebustown.

So I take it you stopped reading before the last page?

Invincible Iron Man was my top pick this week. Fraction succeeded in melding movie Tony with dick post-Civil War Tony and it made for a very entertaining read.

I already read the free comic book day selection and the stuff on the website, and I was actually planning on ordering this on Friday. While it's only been part of the story, I agree with absolutely everything you wrote about it.
