It's a big week for Marvel, coming right before DC finishes off its Crisis next week. A lot of new directions, including...

THUNDERBOLTS #128: So I'm actually quite late to this party. For those like me who need a refresher, your NEW T-bolts lineup include: Black Widow II, Ghost, Headsman, Mister X, and the Irredeemable Ant Man. Now that we have that out of the way, the issue consists of a three-way between Doc Samson, Norman Osborn, and the President. Samson says he has footage of Osborn as the Green Goblin killing people dead at T-bolts mountain. Osborn dismisses this and points the finger at Samson, while tripping some sort of signal. Black Widow II hijacks Air Force One and kills the pilot, while the Ghost kills various Secret Service and the passenger section is broken into by...the Green Goblin? This one definitely ain't Norman. I want to see where this goes. Thumbs up!

DARK AVENGERS #1: Norman Osborn needs Avengers, but they all...well...they kinda hate him. So he goes on a recruitment drive, starting with Bullseye. He then visits some current Mighty Avengers. Ares and Sentry are on board, but Ms. Marvel declines, so Osborn naturally has her replaced by Moonstone. He then gets Venom, but not before injecting him with a tranquilizer that makes him look like the black-suited Spider-Man. Osborn wraps things up by recruiting Daken (!) and Noh-Varr, but there's still the whole thing about no Iron Man or Captain America element. Combining the two, Osborn has the Ghost break into a Stark vault and reveals a new suit of armor. Issue ends with the revelation of the new Avengers team: "Ms. Marvel", Ares, Sentry, "Hawkeye", "Wolverine", and "Spider-Man". Oh, and this new guy calling himself the Iron Patriot...who is none other than Osborn himself. They won't be sitting for long, because there's a little matter of Morgana La Fay taking out Doom in Latveria. I'm a sucker for recruitment issues, so I was hanging on every page. Thumbs up!

MIGHTY AVENGERS #21: So with Osborn making a team of Avengers, what becomes of the Mighty Avengers? This issue sees the Scarlet Witch reappear from nowhere, taking various heroes to Parts Unknown while Jarvis stumbles on Hercules and Amadeus Cho during a bout of various worldwide catastrophes. They decide to go on a recruitment drive of their own and find the best leader for the job...Hank Pym? Oof! They all find the Scarlet Witch, who has conveniently formed a team for them. Your NEW Mighty Avengers lineup: Wasp (Pym), Hercules (with Cho), Scarlet Witch, Hulk, U.S. Agent (!), Vision, and Stature. Hmm...there are worse lineups, I suppose. The source of the disasters is revealed to be Mordred and he's just getting started. I'm a sucker for recruitment issues, but...U.S. AGENT? Seriously? This can't end well. Thumbs up!

UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #2: This book does NOT take a new direction, but is still interesting, as it's basically a look back at Emma Frost. Issue starts with a look at the past and the Hellfire Club attempting to recruit Namor as their White King. When Emma is sent to retrieve Namor, she naturally ends up in bed with him while Shaw sends Sentinels to get them both. The Sentinels are traced back to Shaw, but Selene telepathically wipes out Emma. In the present, Namor offers his physical protection to Emma in exchange for psychic protection. Emma accepts and offers Shaw as a gift. Cut away to a club where Emma gives Shaw a lap dance and then (literally) hands his head to Namor. Of course, it's a fake and the real Shaw is held as Emma's psychic captive, as she prepares to turn him in to Cyclops. This is a must-read for fans of Emma Frost, but for those that don't have attachment to her, it's a decent read. Thumbs in the middle, leaning up.

FINAL CRISIS: SUPERMAN BEYOND #2: This is supposed to tie in to FC directly, but I hope it doesn't, because it muddles everything up THAT MUCH MORE. Who the hell is Mandrakk and if he's so important, why hasn't he been in ANY of the series' first six issues? Oh, and one more thing...AAH! MY EYES! THE GLASSES DO NOTHING! Nice to see NO ONE learned from the optical disaster of the first issue. Thumbs WAY down! Why did I even bother with this?

GREEN LANTERN #37: On the other end of the spectrum, Geoff Johns just continues to amaze with the Red Lanterns storyline. After being a captive for most of the last issue, Sinestro takes ACTION! And he takes VIOLENT ACTION, killing off Laira, to the anger of Hal Jordan, who suddenly turns very red. The conclusion comes next week, but if you haven't gotten on board with this storyline, you need to collect the trade. Johns has me believing in Blackest Night and it should be the total antithesis of Final Crisis. Thumbs up!

Next week: It's Final Crisis #7! See you then.

i rarely read comics anymore but what the hell happened to the AVENGERS? where has Scarlet Witch been didn't she go crazy? im so confused. and why do we have a crap team , she couldn't find any one else so she settled on U.S. Agent, and Hercules?

If Hulk goes on a rampage then the only one who has a chance to stop him is scarlet witch.

Boy, are *YOU* in for some shock, awe and disappointment. My advice: stay away, nothing to see here.
