The thread icon is supposed to show my reaction to some of this. I thought this icon will show my fleeting hope that Marvel was getting back on the right tracks and doing some good stuff again, instead of bullshit like having Wolverine guest starring in every other book each month.
Well, here's the news!
Before we get to the 'important' stuff, let's take a look at Marvel's late Christmas gift to me... Thank's Marvel!
Well, I suppose the 'biggest' news is that Mr. Overexposed is getting ANOTHER solo title. WOLVERINE: ORIGINS is the title and it will be an ongoing monthly. Thanks a fucking lot Marvel Comics! You depower Fantomex, Jubilee, Callisto, Rictor, Marrow, Chamber, Danni Moonstar, Prodigy, Banshee, Sunfire, Blob and many other long standing characters and characters who could go on to be great characters... you fuck them over to give Wolverine another solo book. Motherfucking fuck! The ONLY two saving graces this news brings is that come March, Wolverine will be out of the core X-Men teams and books AND Daniel Way and Steve Dillon are doing the book so it will at least be entertaining.
The other biggie is that just this week, X:MEN: THE 198 FILES came out. It's a prelude to the mini-series giving us an over view of who's left with mutant powers. Needless to say, Wolverine made it! There seems to be a very major problem with it though. While it's obvious that they left out some because the book doesn't list 198 characters, but how the fuck did Namor not get in here? He was the FIRST mutant character... and he's NOT one of the 198? Marvel... I hope you're just fucking with us.
In a more 'marketing' type of news, Starting later this year, your Sunday paper will begin including a mini Amazing Spider-Man comic inserted with the advertisements and comics section. Not a striped down version in the comics section, but an actual comic book. Expect it to start up around August with the original AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 by Lee and Kirby. Let's see DC try to top THIS!
INFINITE CRISIS, meet the Marvel Universe! CIVIL WAR is the company wide 'cross-over event' slated for this year from Marvel. It centers around the 'Marvel Illuminati' consisting of Professor X, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Namor, and Reed Richards having a 'disagreement about a un-named event' and the group splintering into separate factions and fighting about it encompassing the entire Marvel Universe. This will be BIGGER then HOUSE OF M! BIGGER then DECIMATION! BIGGER then every past Marvel Summer Event ever published! ...I wonder if there's any mind-wipes involved? Mark Millar's writing, so it shouldn't be horrible or break the Internet in half.
Marvel is also going crazy allowing PLANET HULK to be drawn out as a 15 issue story arc. This includes a new GIANT SIZE INCREDIBLE HULK #1 shipping in June. Crazy that it might turn off new readers but also crazy that it's the first long term story line they've done in quite a while, which should make us fan-boys happy.
Steve Rude is shopping around ideas for self publishing his creator owned book NEXUS, which was one of the first independent comic books I ever read and enjoyed very much. I hope it works out for him.
In DC news, Brad Meltzer been named writer for the JLA relaunch.JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1 will be in stores in June with Ed Benes doing the art. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are already named as being in the group, but Meltzer claims that he wants a considerably less powerful group this time out. I wonder what Gypsy or Vixen are up to?
Bill Willingham is not only writing SHADOWPACT, but also drawing it. I've always loved his art.
SEVEN SOLDIERS gets some DC continuity love with Guardian slated to join the revamped Justice League of America and Shining Knight joining the Outsiders. Interesting.
Other 'interesting' news is that Midnighter, from THE AUTHORITY, is getting his own solo title putting him in the DC Universe as an after effect of the Captain Atom mini-series. Midnighter interacting with Superman? Would it be love at first sight?
Marvel revealed it's FREE COMIC-BOOK DAY offering for this year and it'll be a RUNAWAYS/X-MEN crossover. Nice to see it's not another Wolverine book...
Well, needless to say, I'm not all THAT excited for Marvel.
I remember hearing that the 198 aren't every mutant left, but a list of mutants that's important for some reason. So, concievably, there are going to be a few high profile mutants who don't make the list. And Banshee wasn't depowered the last time I checked. He was just in Deadly Genesis #2, powers intact.
How can JLA be "less powerful" with Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman still in the group? Do we really want to read a book featuring the Holy Trinity saving the day while a bunch of scrubs try and make themselves useful?
Or worse, story after story featuring some contrived plot to neutralize the main three and leave the world saving up to the B-Team?
If you haven't done your taxes by now, you're late! Here are some of this week's comics in review: COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS #02: I'm happy to say that the Jimmy Olsen vs. Darkseid match (and it was every bit as ridiculous as we all thought it would be)...
