Seems to me like a Tim Couch/Holcomb problem in the making, number one pick and a guy who just plays well when he gets a shot, fighting it out.

|  #5 Posted on 1.3.04 1732.23 | Instant Rating: 5.19 | The only thing I can think of is that they see Palmer as having a whole lot of talent, but lacking confidence. By clearly stating early doors that he's their guy even after the year Kitna had that would certainly go along way to doing that.
Unless they're looking to trade one of them and see Kitna as the more marketable commodity (which he almost certainly is).
Still seems a bit stoopid though putting all that faith in a guy who's yet to do anything in the NFL, but Lewis probably did more than enough last year to buy himself time with just about any decision he makes.

I like the way Lewis is thinking ... he didn't throw the golden boy franchise Heisman winning QB to the lions (not the ones from Detroit) and have him rattle and frustrated his rookie year ... instead he let the team itself build confidence and show that they can win.

Well, at least the way Lewis is doing this hasn't been done before. We've seen the whole training camp fight thing a million times and it usually seems to cause trouble. This way, every one knows going in. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't, but it will be interesting to watch this new approach.

I don't see what the Bengals gain by putting Palmer's first NFL game action off a year or by having him split time with Kitna, especially given his mediocre first three years at USC. They need to get him in the game.

In the past, top porspect QB's often didn't play for several years. Today's QB's are likely more ready, but throwing them to the wolves off the bat just because you are paying them alot doesn't make sense (see Leaf, Ryan). You end up worse off if you don't prepare them to succeed. like ruining their confidence.

However, Palmer has sat for a year (a good thing, IMO) and the team is on the rise. At some point he's going to be "the guy", so it makes sense to start him now, before the team gets good, rather than later when the team IS good but he's still going through growing pains.
Of course, this being the Bengals, all bets are OFF as far as them being good.
