Peyton is called a "politician" by Irsay, and things look like they are going to get REAL ugly real quick.

Rob Lowe is LITERALLY the best sports journalist in Indiana.

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone." --- Bart Giamatti, on baseball

For us fans not so close to the ground, can anyone explain why a 30-something QB is due a $28m bonus in the middle of his contract? Was it Peyton agreeing to defer money so the team could compete better? Was it a 'poison pill' provision to make it near impossible for the team to keep Manning from a last re-negotiation/free-agent deal? Something else?

On the merits, it's a no-brainer that you really can't give that cap money to a player nearing the last stages of his career - even if there wasn't a severe injury to consider. But if this is where we're at, Irsay should sue his PR guys for malpractice.

It seems like it's the first one. The Colts put the franchise tag on Peyton, but that contract would put the team over the cap. He didn't actually take a lot less money in year one, but they set up most of it as bonuses which gets applied over the course of the contract. The deal was seen as very cap friendly at the time.

Most of the money in Year 2 is in the form of that March roster bonus. It had to be put there in case Peyton wasn't able to return to get out of this, because they had no idea if he would when this contract was signed. They didn't seem to be thinking they'd have to turn the entire franchise over then, but it might work out that way too.
