Surely I can't be the only one out there that appreciates this classic system. Anyhow, if you still love the Coleco, what were some of your favourites and non-favourites?

1. Mousetrap. This completely smokes Pac-Man in the department of "run around the maze and eat stuff" games. The maze could be changed by the player, thus locking those cats into certain areas. Creative bonuses, and the fact that you could save the bones for use when needed make this one my absolute favourite.

Edited: How could I forget the little overlay with Mousetrap? With the three colours on the 1-2-3 to shut and open the doors. And the silly looking dog on the '5'. It had the #5 on its nose. I still have this little thing, even though I have no idea what happened to my old system.

2. Tapper. Woo-hoo! Though the root-beer thing is somewhat of a cop-out, everything else was so addictive about this simple little game. From the dancing girls to the varied customers.

3. BC Quest For Tires: Grog's Revenge: 'nuff said. I couldn't have been the only one that loved driving the guy into the walls just to make the cartoon-y splat.

And for the reverse:

1. Space Fury. Turn around in a circle and shoot stuff. I liked the alien at the start, but they sure shot their load on the opening and closing, because the rest of the game sucked like a Nash match.

2. Congo Bongo: This one didn't suck too badly, but the angle was kind of difficult to follow, and there was already a much better game that featured big apes throwing stuff at a man.

3. Cool! Santa brought me the steering wheel and the Turbo cartridge for Christmas! Damn! This game bites!

I've probably forgotten some on both sides of the equation.

Oh my GOD! I thought I was the only person who owned this seemingly bastard child of the home game systems of the 80's. One day I will get a working Coleco again and a copy of Zaxxon which just rocked my world growing up.

how about those moronic controllers? and then there were those games where there was a card that slid over the numbers on the controller. i was a big smurfs and spy hunter fan.

Marge: Mr. Scorpio, this house is almost too good for us. I keep expecting to get the bums rush.
Scorpio: We don't have bums in our town, Marge, and if we did, they wouldn't rush, they'd be allowed to go at their own pace.

I loved Tapper so much I now have it on my Palm Pilot. That game still rules.

You're in a desert, walking along in the sand when all of a sudden you look down and see a tortoise. It's crawling towards you. You reach down and flip the tortoise over on its back. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over. But it can't. Not without your help. But you're not helping.

The joy of the CV was that it ported not huge arcade hits, but the oddballs that Atari wasn't interested in and didn't snatch up. Sure, every system ended up with Donkey Kong and Centipede, but who else specialized in games from little companies like Universal, Exidy and Venture Line?

The arcade ports made the system. Pepper II ruled the universe, and Cosmic Avenger, Frenzy, Front Line, Ladybug, Looping, Mouse Trap, the Mr. Do!s, the Donkey Kongs, Omega Race, Q*bert's Qubes, Roc 'n' Rope, Root Beer Tapper, Slither, Space Panic, Space Fury, Star Trek, Star Wars, Subroc, Time Pilot, Tutankham, Up 'n Down, Venture, Victory, and Zaxxon were all impressively close to their arcade counterparts.

The CV emulators are very cool, and run on a minimum of hardware. Not to mention the new games that devoted hackers have created since then...

I bought the ColecoVision on closeout somewhere for the sole purpose of being able to play Mr. Do's Castle (I think there was a 5200 version as well that came and went faster than I could catch it). I remember lousy controllers but the best versions of the "Do" games as well as the Donkey Kong series...at that time anyway...

I was lucky enough to get a ColecoVision (along with my two brothers) for Christmas the year it came out. We also got Zaxxon (ruled), Venture (ruled), and Lady Bug (really ruled).

Later we got the steering wheel with Turbo and would trade games with our friends.

My freshman year of college (fall 87) I brought it to school as Nintendo was just starting to come out and we wanted something to play but didn't want to shell out cash for a system. People kept coming by and were all caught up on someone still having a working system and they brought all of their games and left 'em with us. I think I started out college with about 8 games and wound up with around 25. I still have that ColecoVision, and it still works to the best of my knowledge. A friend of mine borrowed it about 5 years ago, hooked it up, and played the hell out of it. He said called trying to get new controllers and Sega had bought them out and still had games, parts, etc. for it if anyone is interested.

I was just talking about the CV the other day and had thoughts of trying to hook it back up . . .
