After running a 4.72.(!) 40 Clarett may not be drafted (sports.espn.go.com).

Wow, I think this is slower than he ran last year at his private workout. Karma is a bitch.

I think they need to move the combine to a better place. For years guys have called the turf there slow, no Clarett torpedoes his status. In a few years no one will run. AND they say a center out of Nebraska ripped his knee up, too. Not good.

Clarett has nothing else to do for over a year except train for this combine, and he tanks it. What a wonderful work ethic he is displaying. For his own good, he better have made some wise investments on the money he 'received' at Ohio State or else he will be one of the SportsCenter "Where are They Now" moments from a homeless shelter in about 3 years.

Clarett is now almost in the catergory of "athletes who had it all before they inexplicably blew it," but for that to be the case, he would have to have done something before becoming a distant memory. I never saw what all the fuss was about with him anyway, except for that one forced fumble in the National Title Game.

According to Clarett (on NFL Total Access this evening and paraphrased from my memory), he worked like a maniac at the drills and just didn't get it done in the 40 today. After tanking it, he declined to participate in any further workouts (catching passes on the fly, running the cones, etc.), and will regroup for an individual workout to be held in Cali on March 8 or 9 (my memory is faulty here, not indecisiveness on his part).

Terrell Davis (former Super Bowl MVP and 6th round draft pick as well as co-host of NFL Total Access) tried to lift Maurice's spirits a little by relating his own combine experiences where he could only do the 225-lb bench press 11 times (Clarett did 22), and he ran a 4.7 or so 40 yd dash as well.

I still think Clarett will get drafted in the 4th or 5th round. There are too many teams who are in need of good running backs (Miami, Arizona, Oakland, Tampa Bay) for somebody not to take a chance on getting him to camp. Pittsburgh's got to get younger at RB someday, and if Rudi Johnson sits out all year rather than play under the franchise tag, he might head back to Ohio.

He'll get a shot somewhere. Now what he does with it . . .

I've read somewhere (profootballtalk.com, I think) that officials aren't sold on Clarett's new maturity and new attitude, either. The guy's a trainwreck.

Of course, somebody will take a chance on him. The major unrestricted RBs are locked up, and nobody's going to give up what they need to give up to sign a tendered restricted RB.

I heard on ESPN Radio on Friday (maybe Thursday) that contrary to "popular opinion", the turf is not slow. And, even if it were, everyone is running on the same turf. If it's slow for one guy, it's "slow" for everyone. You never hear of anyone who turns in a good time saying "Yeah, imagine what I'd run on a fast/different turf."

On the "slow track" of the Hoosier Dome: For some reason, it doesn't seem so slow when the Colts offense is putting up pinball numbers on the Denver defense in the playoffs.

My thoughts exactly. Clarett, Moss & Woodson (if he's not traded) all on the same team. Maybe they can add Lawrence Phillips as an assistant coach or something.

Yup... trying to remember where I saw it (maybe ESPN.com) but the organization that runs the combine has been working on the turf, trying to speed it up... and then Incognito (the center from Nebraska) tears up his knee.

They're replacing the turf, which was rated the worst in the league by the NFLPA, in time for next season.

I think you're being just a little unfair. I think Clarett's situation is that of a boxer who trains for his big shot then gets KOed. John Ruiz comes to mind. I know HE sucks, but he did come back from that 19-second KO by David Tua to, like it or not (and most would say NOT), the guy built himself back up and now he has a piece of the heavyweight title. Sure, it will hurt Clarett's draft status, but it's like TD kept saying (over and over) it what you do with the football in games that counts.

If Maurice Clarett's big goal in football was to get a big signing bonus then he's blown it, but if it was to have a long NFL career, there's still plenty of time for that. I'd bet Dennis Green takes him in the 7th round.

While alot of site are claiming that Clarett has blown it by running that time in the 40. Others are saying they never expected him to break 4.6 anyway. 40 time is not a great indicator of success in the NFL anyway (TD ran a 4.7).
If someone can find his 10 and 20 yard splits, that would tell you more about how explosive he is. And its those numbers that are more important for a RB. How often does a RB run 40+ yards?

It is troubling that he walked out after running, as it shows he hasn't grown up.

He will stil be a 2nd day pick. But I still don't see him being a starter in the NFL. Too fragile, no break away speed. If he lands on a team with a solid O-line and strater at RB he could be a good change of pace/ST performer.

Speaking of 40 times, what about Matt Jones, the ex-Arkansas QB, running a 4.37? That's incredible.

The gargantuan Jones, who measured 6-feet-6 and 242 pounds when he checked in, was clocked at 4.40 and 4.37 by scouts. He ran effortlessly and, for a man so big, the times were amazing. Jones, who would prefer to play quarterback but realizes his NFL future will probably be at wideout or perhaps even tight end, had predicted on Saturday that he would run in the 4.4s or better and a few skeptics kidded him about that claim. After Sunday, a lot fewer people are going to doubt Jones when he tells them he can do something. Jones isn't going to be a first-round pick, and never was, but probably moved himself comfortably into the first three rounds now.

Really?

Lets see, last years top 5 rushers
Player - # of runs over 40 Yrds (Reg. Season)- long
Martin - 0 - 25
Alexander - 2 - 44
Dillion - 1 - 44
James - 1 - 40
Barber - 3 - 72

So the top 5 running backs ran more than 40 yards a whooping 7 times all year. (Dillion also broke 40 once in the postseason).

Through in some of the other top backs and get more of the same.

Portis broke 40 in one game, same with LT, Lewis and Green. Fred Taylor had two.

Sure the big run gets on sporscenter and there seems to be one or two each week. but the money players still only get 4+ yards a carry.

I still think 40 time is the most overrated stat in football. It shows how fast a guy can run from point A to point B, but none of that translates into a football game. The more interesting drills to me are the various agility drills, because it shows a back's ability to stop, start and go down the field, which,to me, translates better into game situations.

That's why I think it was a mistake for Clarett to skip those drills after flopping his 40. When you only have one year of film to provide scouts, you'd think you would want to give these guys as much film as possible on you. Hedging everything on your private workout is a risk, I think.

By the way, I do like that the NFL Network is showing parts of the combine live this year, as opposed to last year's tape delay. As a result, I got to see both Maurice Clarett and Mike Williams' runs live, which only hammered home the point to me how worthless a 40 time is. Williams, by the way, averaged in the high 4.6s on his two runs...not too far behind Clarett.

I remember hearing someone on ESPN say that Jerry Rice didn't exactly tear it up in the 40 during his workout before he came to the NFL either.

Here's a very interesting article on Clarett's combine and the time leading up to it:

What Really Happened to Clarett? (sports.espn.go.com)

OFF-TOPIC: By the way, when did they start chopping up their articles over there? I hate that. At least they give you the option to view the article whole.
