I know we have a lot of Canadians around here...does anyone else follow CIS football or am I just wasting space with this thread?

Well, I go to Western, otherwise known as No Defense U. Good God

Western, eh? Has word gotten out around campus about Haylor nearly coming to blows with a fan after the game yesterday?

As long as SMU keeps pounding everyone, I'll follow it... even though I'm a Dalhousie grad.

If it's beatings you like, keep an eye on the OUA scoreboard...U of T has lost it's last two games by a combined 152-0.

I like to follow it, but it is hard. Not much coverage anywhere. Watching "The Score" on Saturday to try and see when they list the scores is a pain in the neck. I think they are going to start showing games this week, though.

The CIS web site is pretty good too, but as I found on Saturday, sometimes not quite accurate. They had the Western-Queens score backwards, showing the Western had won.

My nephew is playing as a Freshman for Queens, so I have started trying to follow them a little more this year. Big game this week with Mac.

EDIT: Good article on one player from UofT in the Star on Friday. He's been there 5 years. Gotta feel for the guy...

I'm a University of Ottawa alumnus, and a die-hard Gee-Gees fan. Was at the SkyDome for their 2000 Vanier Cup win. I'm also pretty good friends with former Hec Crighton winning quarterback Phillippe Cote (Heck, I was just at his wedding last month). Also knew Ibrahim Tournkara (now with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats) quite well.

It's fun football, but I wish the press in Canada would give it more publicity. *realizes he's sounding like JR talking about the XFL*

Question: Do *they* play with three downs, too?

Washington Huskies, 1-1. USC didn't look THAT great after the first quarter, so I'm more optimistic that they'll be the 2003 Pac-10 champs.

Haz: Who is your nephew? I'm in my final year at Queen's...people are actually getting excited about the Mac game this weekend. I can't remember the last time anyone got excited about a non-Homecoming game in September. The comeback on Saturday was certainly encouraging.

The backwards score on Saturday was pretty funny, because everyone had it backwards until about 11 PM. Coming back from London the Fan in TO had it 47-35 UWO, as did The Score. When my screen name posted the actual score people thought I was just in denial.

It would be nice to see a little more coverage, but I can see it being a tough sell in a big market like Toronto where York and U of T are perennially bad. I think if either team became a power things might be a bit different. The weekly games on The Score are nice, but I don't care for the fact that they won't travel east of Toronto unless you pay them. Queen's had to pay them $10, 000 to come and broadcast the playoff game with Western last year if you can believe that.

JJD: Yep, three downs. Actually, that's a good lead-in to the Larry Haylor story. With UWO up 35-33 on Saturday they went for a 3rd-and-1 at their own 40 with about four minutes left. Sure enough, the Gaels made their first good play against a run right then, took over on downs, and scored the go ahead (and eventually winning) TD a couple plays later. Naturally, the locals were not impressed. The story going around the rooms after the game was that a fan in the first couple of rows had some words for Haylor after the game, something to the effect of "for the good of the program, why don't ya just retire". Haylor went for the guy but his assistants pulled him back and quickly ushered him into the room. I didn't see it myself, but a lot of people (media, stadium people, overheard a couple players) were talking about it on the way out.

Don't mess around with Larry my ass. He hasn't won anything at UWO in 10 years, which for them is an eternity. He beats up on weak teams when his squads are good, but it seems every year now he gets his due. Last year's 52-20 pounding down here was especially nice.

I dunno about this Haylor vs. a fan story, but the natives are getting restless. Well, as restless as we get here at UWO, which has the fan support of the Arizona Cardinals. It's kinda ironic that Haylor might go after breaking the CIS wins record, but hey, Western needs a shake-up.

Edited because I spell good.

Ian Hazlett.

He is a LB. I believe he is 2nd string and playing regularly on the special teams. Queens had all it's starters back at LB this year, so he is biding his time learning more and more...

A letter in today's UWO Gazette.....

-----------------------
Enough is enough! A humiliating loss to Windsor in the season opener, a team we had not lost to in 25 years, and now this: a 47-35 loss to Queen's. No more. Haylor must go! This loss is simply the final straw.

No Mustangs team up 28-10 should fall apart like that. I know the defense is young and we have a new system but remember, Haylor is the one who brought in this change. Why? To protect his own job. After two poor playoff performances, he decides to deflect the blame and cans coaches under him to protect his own position. The fact is, in sports, players stop listening to the top guy after a while. So the top guy must go for the benefit of the program. Instead of stepping aside to protect his interests, he fires a bunch of folks under him.

Don't believe me Haylor's lost his objectivity? Simply recall that horrible playoff game his son was having as quarterback a few years ago. Rather than try and get something going with the backup, Haylor left "Jr." in and the ‘Stangs went down in flames.

Why is it Haylor asks so much of the players only not to do it himself? It's time Haylor did the same. That's right, have some balls, step up to the plate and resign. And if he can't do it, then it's time for the sports hierarchy at Western to clean up this mess. Fire him, the sooner the better.

Nah, nah, nah, nah/nah, nah, nah, nah/Hey Haylor/good-bye!

Well, since I'm looking at this from a Queen's perspective, I'm happy to see Larry Haylor stay on the Mustangs' sideline for as long as he wants. The fact that Western has gone almost ten years without a Vanier Cup appearance should be a pretty obvious sign to people there that Haylor doesn't have it anymore.

Do you happen to know if the Gazette is online anywhere? I know some people around here who would be very interested to see that.

Man, with all this "down" talk of the Mustangs taking place in this thread, I'm liking my Gee-Gees' chances against them this Saturday. BTW, it's the first game of the season on the Score, in case some people here didn't already know.

p.s. I'm the ops editor for the UWO Gazette, so I got the pleasure of printing that very letter posted earlier. The letter was even brought up by (former Gazette editor) Elliot Friedman in an interview he did with Haylor on The Score.
