The Globe & Mail, amongst other newspapers, reported today and yesterday that Cineplex Galaxy LP, owners and operators of Cineplex Odeon & Galaxy Theatres throughout Canada, have purchased Famous Players from Viacom for a cool $500 million. Due to wacky Canadian anti-monopoly laws Cineplex Galaxy must sell 35 theatres in cities where Cineplex & Famous Players compete (Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, London, St. Catherine's, Kitchener, Hamilton, Kingston, Ottawa, Toronto, Gatineau, Montreal & Quebec City).

It'll be interesting to see which theatres get sold.

What the heck? That's not cool!

I can already hear the Jackson Square location (here in Hamilton) start to close. Grrrrr.....I don't like large theatres

IDEA: Make the theatres that are intended to close into rerun theatres? Toronto doesn't have any anymore!

EDIT: Jackson Square is a small screen location.

Say hello to rising movie ticket prices. Most likely they'll jump a year from now, or so say the experts being interviewed. I avoided them before at those prices, and I'll do it again.

Take the plunge. Step into liquid.

What happened last year in Calgary was that Famous Players lowered their prices (to $10.95 flat general admission), and a couple days later Cineplex Odeon did the same.

The prevailing wisdom, at least for now, is that prices will stay put...at least until heating oil prices skyrocket some more, and then prices will creep upwards again.

My experience in Calgary is that there are three awesome "cheapie theatres" where you can see movies for $4.00 a show. Why pay more than that? Are there still the two moviedome ones and the Dreamplex?

I'm so looking forward to returning to town next month.

As a side note, I'll never pay double digits for movies, and I'll never go to a theatre with a screen that's bigger than my apartment :-D

It's another solid episode for Family Guy. I think this one got a little bit preachy with the whole "ends justify the means" thing regarding insurance companies, but overall, it still managed to bring a lot of funny with it.
