Unlike some other areas of the East Coast, Brood X has been a bust in my section of Northern NJ. It has been a Cicada Free Zone so far this spring and from this article in the Star-Ledger Click Here (nj.com) it would appear that it is going to stay that way for the next 9 years when Brood II re-emerges. Maybe by then my 6 year old little dunk will have forgotten her close encounter with a Cicada down in Princeton last weekend.

I'm guessing that's what happened in my area. I live near the Watchung Reservation and haven't seen any cicadas this time around. In 1996, it was the total opposite. They were everywhere for about a month.

I have yet to see one in my area, but that's probably because I live in a marshland, so the bugs had noplace to burrow. They're north of here, south of here, but they're not here.

I have seen, however, a mosquito as big as a quarter.

I had one fly down the back of my softball jersey on Tuesday. That was fun...

They've been going non-stop around here. It constantly sounds like car alarms are going off in the distance. There are so many in our trees, if you shake a branch, about 20 or so go flying.

I'll grab one when I think about it and take a pic for all you non Right Coasters...

Nothing better then finding the shells they shed as a kid. Those things still look like something out of Predator. So far I haven't heard them or seen any yet but they usually come around here in July.

I'm heading out to Dayton next week to visit my mom and I expect to see a few. She said they haven't hit her neighborhood yet, but they're really bad in the area around Kings Island amusement park. So I'm guessing the Cincinnati area would be a good place for cicada spotting.

That is, if you actually want to see them.

It seems the Cicadas have made their presence known at the Memorial Golf Tourney at Muirfield Country Club in Dublin, OH. Click Here (sports.yahoo.golfserv.com)

I can just picture a Cicada landing on Tiger's ball just as he is about to putt......

:-) We have the "nonperiodical" ones here -- meaning we get them *every* year! The part of Phoenix where I grew up was especially busy. They'd get into the house, drive the dog crazy, squash themselves on all the light fixtures. Ahhh, good times!
