At Guru's recommendation, I bought a modified Sampo DVE-611.

When I get some free time, I'll get into the big stack of DVDs I suddenly own. ;-)

Oh, that's what you got? I've been looking at one of those for the past several days, myself. Then, suddenly, a friend of mine pointed me toward the Apex AD-1500, which is less expensive, but I don't know nearly as much about it. Where'd you get your Sampo, and how much did it run you? I found them available at the www.area450.com store for $109 plus S/H.

P.S. If Guru's reading, could you tell me why you reccomended the Sampo?

Well, the requirements included a need for multiregion support and a few other goodies that you can get on a modified Sampo DVE-611.

I didn't want to have to trade him my Apex AD-600 with the "You should not be here" menu, so I had to find one comparable so that we could get Region 2 discs and watch them...

Check Ebay for the Sampo. Ebay will no longer list the AD-600 due to the fact that macrovision can be turned off on it, but they WILL sell the Sampo that can be modified with the same feature. If you need this feature, look for "VCR friendly" in the ad...

Last time I checked ebay, there were about 3 selling with macrovision / region free options for $179.

Oh, like I said, I found the Sampo already at the Area 450 website for $109, and the region hack is just a simple line of ASCII text burned onto a CDR that you pop in the player.

Now, what's the deal with the newer Apex models, like the 1000 and the 1500? Do they not have the same features that the 600 did?

The tools menu is gone on the newer ones. Basically, they are just inexpensive MP3/VCD/SVCD/DVD players.

On the Sampo, the trick is the macrovision disabling from what I hear, not the region code. I dunno. I don't have one to play with.

//edit: Geeze, I should have researched this more. Sorry Chris, I guess you overpayed a little. Eh. Don't upgrade your firmware, btw It looks like the one you bought has an unsupported firmware.

Oh, sure, but I don't care about Macrovision. I just want something that'll play the Region 2 UK ECW DVDs on my TV, and it looks very much like the Sampo will do that. Plus, for $109, I'd be stupid NOT to buy it.

They still sell chips for the Apexes for $20, but I don't recall the URL...that was always my "when I get a round tuit" option, gamble $79 on a Wal-Mart Apex and try to install the modchip.

Install? Chip? Frig that, I'll just go the CDR route. The idea of soldering my new DVD player into a paperweight just ain't all that attractive to me.
