Just interviewed Chad Millman, who did a great piece on the Ed Martin/Michigan fiasco for ESPN mag, for a second time yesterday.

We are both wondering what the sam hell Webber is trying to do, considering the fact that he HAS lied nearly continuously about his affairs with Martin from the get go.

I mean he obviously won't do jail time, but COME ON! Just don't try to snow everyone over.

My question is, why the hell would he lie in the first place? If he'd told the truth, then... so what? There have been many other players who've accepted money from boosters. But he lied to a federal grand jury, for crying out loud-- that's not something to sneeze at.

It reminds me very much of when they impeached Bill Clinton. If he'd said something like, “Yes, I did have a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky, and it's nobody's fucking damn business but ours”, hell-- he wouldn't have been impeached for lying under oath. But noooo...

Of course, Clinton was eventually exonerated. And I'm sure Webber won't do any jail time for this, because of who he is. But damn it, why can't professional athletes behave themselves? People all around the world look up to them-- kids look up to them. When you're in a position like that, where you can make a difference in the lives of so many people, I think you should hold yourself to an even greater level of self-responsibility than your average Joe Schmoe. If I lied to a federal grand jury, I'd be lucky to make the WISH-TV News at Six. But Chris Webber is a basketball player who makes millions of dollars and has millions of fans. He should learn to behave himself.

And the same thing goes for Allen Iverson, J.R. Rider, and half the guys on the Portland Trail Blazers as well-- hell, the same goes for everybody who's at that level of society. If you don't want your crimes to be broadcast on CNN, then stop breaking the law, assholes!

Webber does have a good reason to lie. If he pocketed several hundred thousand dollars illegally, that means it was money not reported to the government. Personally, I'd rather take my shot against a perjury charge than have the IRS go after me.

Thank you Mr. Wanz for the check, now you get an AWA World Title Reign. But be careful, my boy Greg is a heat machine.

Yeah, but now he'll get BOTH.

You'd rather be in danger of a jail sentence than be audited by the IRS?

Wow. Do you owe them money?

I remember Kornheiser and Wilbon saying one day that the thing about Webber is that he wants people to like him and is willing to say whatever it takes to show his good-will. As such it's a lot easier to try a "Aw, shucks. I was just a kind being manipulated by a father-figure who told me he loved me, and who is now lying about me" defense, than trying a "Maybe I did take the money, whacho gonna duwbowit."

Webber probably doesn't want to have Michigan suffer because of any admission. Having to take down the banners or erase the final four results from records probably would damage his "I'm the victim" mentality. People have given him the benefit of the doubt, and he probably wants to avoid any Marcus Camby/Bobby Jackson comparisons.

Has anyone visited this site? It's got some pretty good info on the drafts of year's past, but apparently the site has moved http://www.unc.edu/~lbrooks2/draft.html I saw the new address (had "verizon" in it, I believe)
