I'm a bit late to the boat on this one, but we have the answer to the question of "Who will wield the shield?" It's the same guy that rocked the world (or maybe not) as the Human Torch.

Captain America Confirmed - Movies News at IGN

Reports surfaced on Friday that the actor -- best known to fanboys as the Human Torch from the Fantastic Four movies -- had been offered the job by Marvel. And now the Heat Vision blog has confirmed that the actor has accepted the role of Steve Rogers, the 90-pound weakling who through a government experiment is turned into the pinnacle of human perfection -- the star-spangled Avenger known as Captain America.

"Sources tell us the actor has not only accepted Marvel's offer," says the site, "but that the dealmaking moved so fast it's now all about dotting the i's and crossing the t's."

On one hand, I was convinced that Marvel needed to go the Superman route and grab an unknown to pick up the Cap role. But they could have done a lot worse than Chris Evans, who looks like he fits the Cap mold on paper. The only thing is, will people be able to accept Evans as Cap without thinking of him as the Human Torch?

Flame on, America!

I think all will be forgotten, especially if they do the talked about Fantastic Four reboot ...

I think Evans is a great choice and can at least hang in there with the likes of Robert Downey, Jr. & Samuel L. Jackson for the Avengers movie.

He has the look for Cap, but I don't see him as the leader of leaders that Cap is in the Marvel Universe. I do find it odd they screen tested almost every young character in Hollywood and they seem to randomly got his name out of a hat. I am sure he will be ok in the stand alone movie, but I think people are looking at him in Avengers to see if he can fit in there. If they build him up nicely in his own movie, he should be ok when Avengers rolls around. I am still more jacked to see Thor though.

So much for the rumored casting of John Krasinski.

I just couldn't picture Jim from The Office as a superhero as hard as I tried.

I will always maintain the Fantastic Four movies weren't as bad as they were made out to be, and that Evans as the cocky young Torch was a highlight.

YES. Chris Evans is perfect for this. Crazy charismatic, a very good actor, should be great fun watching him spark off of Downey in THE AVENGERS. FWIW Marvel seem to be retconning their movie universe so that Stark is the main man of the Avengers team, not Steve Rogers. I have no problem with that.

If they are making it so that Tony Stark is the leader then I guess I can live with Chris Evans. But, sheesh, growing up Cap was THE Man and I couldn't see anyone that young leading the likes of Downey Jr.'s Iron Man or Samuel L's Nick Fury.

I had heard "they" originally wanted Jon Hamm to play Cap, but he turned them down. Someone more along the likes of Hamm is who I would've wanted for Cap. As long as they don't have Evans ripping off corny jokes like in FF, I'll give it a chance.

Hamm was never in the running. Marvel have been looking to cast a relative newbie in his mid-twenties since day one, which is pretty much the right age range for the original WWII-era Steve Rogers. Lotsa online support for Hamm, though.

I loved the Fantastic Four movies. I think Chris Evans was excellent in those. He seems to do well in action movies - he was good in CELLULAR.

Count me in as excited for this.

Valid points, but Cap was originally very young when he got the super soldier serum, and was frozen a few years later still a young man. When the Avengers found him decades later, he was still young in appearance, but still led them from that point on. I always assumed he was much younger than Stark, Pym, etc. He even gave orders to Thor.

Remember, Tony Stark donated Avenger's Mansion and all their gear (and Jarvis, as I recall). Steve Rogers knew that. Rogers would be relatively young, although old in years since he was in suspended animation from 1945 to 1964 or whatever. Cap was a war hero and Tony would have known all about him, probably read all about him when he was a kid.

Maybe Cap (the new Cap) was in the first Gulf war, kicking butt on the revolutionary guard until he saved a soldier from being hit with a SCUD missile and was knocked into suspended animation in a tank of liquid hydrogen in Iraq and wasn't discovered until the second Gulf war when we were looking for WMDs.

Fantasy screenwriting!

I guess my memories of Captain America were reading all the issues when they brought him back in the 60's (I mean, I read the 60's issues when I was younger, not when they first came out - c'mon I'm not DrDirt or Pieman or AWArulz aged here - I KEED!!). That and the fantastically awesome TV show where Rogers' most amazing ability was having the bad guy's bullets bounce off his shield while still mounted to his motorcycle because they never had the budget to do anything cooler than that.

I think Mark Valley would be awesome, but the mid 20s casting directive excludes him.

Evans was good in FF, despite the movie, so I'll give him a chance. If they reboot FF, or get the rights back from Fox and reboot it to crossover with the Marvel movies, I will be expecting something that tops Roseanne's Two Beckys incidents.

OG Becky/Not Sarah Chalke enters.
Roseanne: Where the hell have you been?
Becky: In the garage?

I've actually never seen Chris Evans in anything, so I'm reserving any judgment until I see something for Captain America (a teaser trailer, a promotional image of him in costume, etc.) Despite the fact that the few pictures of him that I have seen don't make him look like he really fits the mold, big changes are definitely possible.

Chris Evans and Micheal Chiklis made the FF movie for me (I only saw part 2). I've also seen Evans in Cellular, London, and some other movie that doesn't come to mind. He hasn't failed to impress me yet.

I can see him being Capp'in Murrica the determined inspiring stoic super soldier. If played right this would be his greatest role yet.

I like Chris Evans in just about everything I've seen him in. In fact I've always joked with my buddies that Not Another Teen Movie, a parody of many movies but mostly She's All That, had a better cast (Evans, Chyler Leigh, Eric Christian Olsen) than the movie it parodied (Freddie Prinze Jr, Rachel Leigh Cook, Paul Walker). He plays the same sort of character in every movie and it's not Captain America-like but I'm willing to give him the chance.

The other big concern is whether he can go toe-to-toe on screen with Downey. Chiklis might not be the star that Downey is but he's definitely a commanding presence and Evans never seemed inferior, so I think he'll do fine on screen with Downey. This was a big concern to me for some of the less known actors that were trying out for the role.

I'm also excited about two of his upcoming movies, The Losers and Scott Pilgram vs. the World. If both are good then I could be stoked for a Chris Evans Captain America.

You can't take away the story of him from WWII, it just won't work.

He has to have fought in 'The Big One' Which is the ONLY war to have meant anything. Any other war and it just becomes stupid. What other war could have produced the Red Skull. A Nazi!

That was the main reason the rest of the Avengers followed his lead. He was Captain Fucking America who fought against the Nazis in WWII for Christs sake.

Yes. I most certainly am ignoring that abomination of a film. Hugo Weaving will be doing a much better job.

...too bad he'll sound like Megatron though.

Um, no, Katie Cassidy plays Black Canary. Because clearly someone who is sorry he saw a spoiler wouldn't turn around and drop a huge one on the rest of us. Right? RIGHT? Dammit John. Well there goes my theory and half of my podcast, thanks John.
