Just for the hell of it I was thinking of wrestlers that were rumored to win titles, and didn't for some reason or another, and what it would have meant to their careers if they had.

Brutus Beefcake- Popular opinion was that he was supposed to go over Mr. Perfect for the IC title at Summerslam '90 before his parasailing accident. Kerry Von Erich stepped in and took the title. Ummmm. I think that even had the accident not happened Beefcake would still, ya know, suck ass. I mean, I wanted him to win at the time, but I was pretty young then, and was not yet fully aware of how bad he sucked. He probably would have had a six month reign and ended up in the same place he did anyways, following around Hogan.

Ted Dibiase- I've heard stories saying that Ted was going to win the WM IV title tournament, but due to the Honkytonk Man refusing to job the the IC title to Savage they gave the WWF belt to Savage to keep him happy. I'm not too sure about this one, as I don't see how HTM could have changed all the WWF's booking plans. Plus, it's hard to imagine a heel going over in the main event of a WM back in that day. But let's just say that the stories are true. I think of everybody on this list, Dibiase would have benefitted the most. This could have possibly launched him to a permenant main event slot, instead of tagging with Irwin R. Schyster. At the very least, he would be able to call himself a former world champion- a distinction that he truly deserved.

Sid- It seemed inevitable that the newly turned face Sid was going to unseat Vader at Starcade '93, and claim his first world title- until he decided to stab Arn Anderson with a pair of scisors, that is. I don't think this would have done much for Sid, who went on to win the WCW and WWF world titles anyways. He probably would have tanked as champ, dropped the belt to Flair, so he could in turn drop it to the incoming Hogan. Much like Beefcake, no title could really help Sid.

Owen Hart- Another one that popular opinion said was going to win the IC title, and we all know what happened. This, of course, is the most tragic of all the wrestlers on this list. And unfortunately, the IC title probably wouldn't have done much for Owen at that point because of the state of wrestling. Crash TV ruled the airwaves, and the IC title usually changed hands every few weeks. It is nice to think that Owen would have had a nice, long reign that would have brought prestige back to the tarnished title, though. But who cares about titles anyways, when someone like Owen had to lose his life. RIP, Owen.

Well, didn't mean to end on a down note, but that's how it goes sometimes. Has anyone else heard of any wrestlers that were scheduled to win a title, but never did? These were the only four I could pull out of my quickly decaying brain. Thanks.

How about Lex Luger supposedly giving away the ending to Wrestlemania X in a New York newspaper, causing Vince to change the main event to Yokozuna vs. Bret Hart?

*The main event for WrestleMania X was at one point going to be Luger vs. WWF champion...Ludvig Borga. That's right. Fortunately, Vince realized that Borga sucked and changed the plans.

How about the idea that got Vince Russo replaced - Tank Abbot as WCW Champion.

No matter how bad things may get, just imagine what would happen if Vince Russo was booking again, and you will feel better.

Tank Abbott would've been Harley Race compared to David Arquette.

Oh yeah. I had totally forgotten about the Luger and Tank Abbott situation, and I had never heard of the plan for Ludvig Borga to be WWF champion. Now that would be messed up. Makes you wonder where he would be today if he was a former WWF champion.

I don't know about the Luger situation. There is a possibility that if he had won the title he may have stayed in the WWF a little longer. And if he had stayed in the WWF longer we wouldn't have gotten his shocking appearance on the first Nitro. I don't imagine things being much different for him or the industry today, though. Unless the WWF would have been more willing to bring him back if he was a former champ, and didn't pull the diappearing act that he did when he left.

Tank Abbott as WCW champion. No, I don't think this would have changed anything. WCW was in such a big hole then that it wouldn't have mattered either way. And I doubt that it would have helped him get into the WWF. I think they would have been smarter than to hire him no matter what his WCW credentials were.

I think Jake Roberts would have made a damn fine Intercontinental Champion.
Roddy Piper never held the world title in either company, right? That's a shame, too.
As of now, I think Benoit needs a WWF Title run.

It's a damn shame that the great heels of the late 80s could never rise above what they were because of the fact that the WWF would never give them the title. It is so important these days for a heel to win a title, that it's hard to believe that wasn't always the case. Ted Dibiase, I think, could have been considered one of the greatest bad guys ever if they had let him have that title for a while.. even if they let him get away with buying it from Andre. Who cares how, as long as he did get it. Roddy Piper, also. I mean, these guys aren't very credible threats if they could never actually win.

As I recall, there were plans on putting the WWF title on Test just after the marriage angle. He was a huge face at the time.

NO WAY!!! I cannot honestly believe that they would actually put that belt on Test. I started watching WWF around that time and he was nowhere near over enough then. Hes barely a credible IC champ right now today. Im not calling you a liar Stampede but that has to be that "Russo-era" booking Im always hearing about.

Ok.. so I know Benoit is the greatest thing ever to all the 'net smarts out there. But having the benefit of watching WWF with a whole crowd of casual fans - it ain't gonna happen anytime soon. Most of your casual fans and marks don't care about him at all. Several of my friends have even said they could care less if he came back or not. Personally, I do like him and I can't wait to see him back. But he's not Champ material - yet. Why? The charisma factor. He's severely lacking. "But he's an amazing technical wrestler," you say. So what? Look at the WWF champs over the past several years - Rock, Austin, HHH, Foley, Jericho, Angle - they all have that certain charisma that sucks the casual fans in. Benoit will never hold the strap until he can pull in a crowd reaction like that. Unfortunately in the WWF actual wrestling skill isn't everything, charisma plays a huge part.

Quite frankly, watching Survivor Series 1999, I'm surprised they DIDN'T! Watch the tape. When Austin is run over, when they're annoucing it'll still be a three way dance, etc. Test is ALWAYS in the background and looks to be playing a major role. Though I guess playing Stephanie's boy toy IS considered a major role.

I still called The Big Show coming out before he did - but Test was my backup. That night I really think they could've gotten away with it.

Yeah, ok...Steamboat/Savage was an ultra hot feud that got alot of airtime.
Hennig and DiBiase both ran programs with Hogan at one point or another.

Benoit will be the WWF Champion by the end of 2002. Why? The fans love him. We're fans, remember? Benoit is good wrestling. He HAS charisma, Bret Hart style charisma. He does his talking in the ring! Besides, look at the main event:
Jericho
Hogan
Hall
Nash
Benoit
Undertaker
Kane
HHH
Austin
Rock
Angle
Flair

Flair is part-time
Hogan, Hall & Nash are gimmicky guys, and may not be trusted enough to get the big prize...
Angle, HHH, Austin, Jericho, Rock & Kane have all had their time within the last while...
Undertaker will get a farewell run
Benoit is the only guy without a title run so far, after 16 years in the business. They gave Jericho the ball as a show of good will and "Hey, good work"-ness, so they'll give Benoit one too.
Oh, and RVD'll have a run next year.

Rumor has it that Gangrel was booked to win the WWF Championship from Rock on one RAW sometime, but they changed it right before the match.

Oh wait. I made that one up.

True. And that was why when David Arquette defended the title against Tank Abbot, people were begging for Tank to win. What a difference a few months make, eh?

I may be wrong here, but I could swear that right after Billy Gunn's feud with Rock fizzled and he turned face (before the Outlaws reformation) that the WWF was going to give him the WWF Title in a match against HHH on Raw. But they changed their minds *during* the show (after booking the match) and then just had him come real close to winning only to lose. I swear I remember reading about this because I hated Gunn and thought HHH ruled at the time and was relieved to find out. If this happened now I would be pissed, considering I hate HHH and think Gunn is off the charts. Anyway, I don't have anything other than a faded memory of this, so do with it what you wish, but remember, before you discard it, that Russo WAS booking at the time and he did love that ass gimmick.

EDIT: I actually looked this up in the ol' CRZ archive and found the match, it occured on September 6th, 1999 and was the main event of said show. Gunn got a belt shot for a long 2 count and the Fameasser while there was no ref (courtesy of Shane-O-Mac) before falling to the Pedigree. In case anyone cared.

One champion that could've and should've been back in the day was Chris Jericho back in 1999. The whole crowd went absolutely nuts when he "won" the belt from Trip on RAW (I almost smacked the guy in the seat behind me in the face when I jumped up). The time was right, the crowd was hot, the circumstances totally believeable (with Earl Hebner reffing the match and the APA at ringside).

When Jericho just gave the belt back, it took a TON of momentum away from him... I don't think he'd have that choker label today if they'd just let him win that one match. Even if Trip takes the belt back at the Last Man Standing match they later had, at least Jericho gets a shot at the big one and makes him a more believeable threat at the unified title later on.

Instead, he looked like a 12 year old returning a purloined candy bar to the local 7-11. And no matter how good a whiny heel he may be, it's hard for anyone to ever believe he's got what it takes when the chips are down now. Thanks Trip

First of all, if took place in April 2000. No big deal, just everyone seems to get the date wrong on this match.

Second, if Jericho took the belt that night, then Triple H's upcoming match against the Rock at Backlash would have been meaningless, as would have been Steve Austin's one-night return.

Caring is the first step towards disappointment.
