I used to burn CDs for myself (mixing copies of other CDs I owned) using my CD burner. My uncle got me a DVD burner for Christmas and replaced by CD-R drive with the DVD-R drive.

Q: Can I still burn CDs with my DVD-R drive?

I just bought THIS Samsung DVD burner for my new system, but I dont know which brand of blank DVDs to buy for it (I heard that certain brands are less/more compatible with certain burners than others?). Is there a brand(s) that stand out as being more compatible with more burners than others?

I tried searching for some sort of "Compatible DVD media" list on the net, but I couldnt find anything useful.

I've never had an issue with my DVD burner and any media. Maybe search for the name of your drive and media errors to see if you can find any that you should avoid.

Good suggestion. I found a couple reviews of the drive & a "Compatiability Test" where they tested the drive against a few brands, but the results were mostly techie mumbo-jumbo and didnt come off very specific to me.

Since the burner is a Samsung, is it ok to assume that Samsung blank DVD's should be pretty safe?

Also, whats the difference between DVD-R/DVD-RW & DVD+R/DVD+RW?

They are two different standards that are incompatable.

The short version is, if you have a dual drive, it shouldn't matter to you. If you want to use RW discs, buy the +RW because (in my opinion) it is a better implementation that then -RW (the format time is much faster - I believe it is around 15 seconds VS full disc burn time)

When I'm Word for an extended period of time, or a graphics-heavy page (i.e. Facebook), my screen's image breaks up with a number of red lines. It's like that scene in Matrix when the screen goes all green, except in this case it's red.
