In a week where teams have been bleeding money for a bunch of mediocre players, the Cards get a HUGE steal in Kennedy, who's been a consistent .300 hitter for many years. Great signing!
Kip Wells is not so exciting, but he'll be a necessity, especially if Mark Mulder isn't ready to go next season.
"That's the thing: Maybe he'll be up and down this season, but when he's up, is there another center in the league quite like him? He protects the rim, passes out of double teams, has great hands around the basket, up-fakes on his jump-hooks, rebounds in traffic, even has a motor that keeps going and going (unlike a stiff like Eddy Curry). I'm not sure what's missing here. This is stunning. This is startling. There's almost no precedent for it. Just what the Lakers needed: More obscenely good luck. Meanwhile, I have to watch Al Jefferson whip jump-hooks off the front of the rim for the third straight season. I will now pour scalding hot water down my pants." -Bill Simmons on Andrew Bynum (11/08/06)

If two years out of seven at .300 or higher is consistently hitting above .300, then I'm a consistent 200 bowler.
He's a .280 career hitter. Not bad, but that's also not near the level that .300 implies. (and he's actually only hit above .280 twice, his two .300 seasons.) It's probably more fair to call him a .270 hitter who's had a couple of good seasons with the BA.
However, I do like the signing a little better than my Cubbies giving Mark DeRosa all that money they gave him.

Fire Bowa? About time. Fire Wade? Absolutely. Trade Abreu? No way. I'd rather see them deal Thome than Abreu. Please understand, I don't want them to deal Thome, but they do have a guy (Howard) that they could plug into 1B.
