So I just bought a car today (1984 Chevy Corvette, if you're interested). It's a pretty decent looking car with a very nice paint job. It stands out, to say the least.

Well, I was parked outside of a friend's apartment, and when I went out at about 11:00p tonight to go get some gas down the street, I noticed that someone had taken an orange, which was still laying on the road next to the car, and had thrown/smeared it all over various parts of the driver's side window, the windshield, and the hood. Basically, it made my car a sticky mess.

I call the police, who suggested I just contact my insurance company to see if I'm covered. My question is, do you think this was just random vandalism? Or is there something about oranges (or citrus fruits in general, maybe) that made these juvenile college punks choose it? I was worried that while I'm waiting to get the car washed and detailed that the citrus may be doing something to the paint.

(For the record, they also put some minor scratches in the hood too. Needless to say, I am not pleased AT ALL.)

Take it from personal experience, when that Hotlanta sun bakes in that sugar, it will strip the paint when you try to take off.

If I were you, I'd try to wash your car before noon.

My formula from back in the day for vandalizing cars had sugar in it. Not that it excuses it, but I was a very angry 13 year-old that was pissed that we had to move later that year. So in the summer, I took a sugary mix and in the mid day sun I pelted cars with my sugar balloons.

I had some not so happy neighbors later that day/week, but none of them knew it was me, and I didn't care as I was moving in three months.

I remember my neighbor across the street asking me if our cars were touched, as he had to get a new paint job because of what happened.

And oranges contain acid which may damage the finish. This is why in ancient times, young unattached males were sent to live apart from the community because they were generally asses. Unfortunately today, women seem to enjoy lowering themselves to our level way to often. Good luck witht the damage.

I woke up early this morning and read Zeruel's reply. That got me paranoid enough to go to a car wash and detail place (Bunkey's - if you live in the Triangle, this is an EXCELLENT place to go for all your car exterior needs). The owner, TC, told me he was more worried about the acid than the sugar.

A simple car wash got all of the juice off the car with no problems. And for $60 he spent about an hour buffing the painted stripes on the hood to get rid of the scratches. If you look REALLY close you can still see some scratches, so the damage has been done. But if you're standing right next to the car, even just a foot away, you can't tell a thing is wrong.

Lesson learned: find a parking lot for my car where drunken asshole Duke students can't maim it. Thanks for the quick replies!

Didn't make it clear. Sorry. Twenty or so years ago, it would have been men but today who knows.
