| #1 Posted on 6.3.03 1836.57 | Instant Rating: 7.87 | In Canada, the trend over the past 18 months or so has been watching all the high speed ISPs develop caps - be it bit caps, or bandwidth transfer caps...
I work for Bell Sympatico, and we were the first major ISP to be doing so. Slowly but surely, the others have been falling into place - with Rogers officially announcing today, but not what their limits are.
Generally speaking in Canada, on regular high speed, you can get anywhere from a 1-1.5M download, and a bandwidth cap from 10-15 gigs. The cost will vary from between $34.95 and $44.95.
I don't keep up with the US or other countries, so is this a worldwide trend, or is it exclusive to Canada? What kind of limits do you face, and what's the cost?
I have heard that despite the bitching we get from consumers that Canada's looking quite reasonable in contrast to other places, so hit me with the stats!

| #4 Posted on 7.3.03 0220.42 | I also have Comcast (digital cable and Internet service). There isn't a bandwidth cap for usage--it's basically whatever your machine can handle.
Internet service by itself can run close to $65 with modem fees and what not. The digital cable is more expensive ($25 more than regular analog cable).
They run some mini-discount if you have both, which (after all the taxes they levy) runs about $125 per month ($100 per month for analog service and cable internet).

I hope to HELL they're not ever going to enforce that rule. I'm with Telus here in Calgary, and I probably do 50 gigs down, and 80 gigs up (I allow lots of uploads on KaZaA) a month, and I've never had any trouble.
I was told that there were no problems with bandwidth usage when I joined, and as far as I "know" (cough cough), there is no limit. I made SURE to look through the contract, and from what I saw, there was NOTHING in there about the said rule. So, if it ever gets enforced... guess who's gonna make a great big noisy fuss?

This was based on the telus.net FAQ. I highly doubt they're concerned with home users that much...easier to get money from the big boys!

| #8 Posted on 8.3.03 0111.45 | Gee, whatever you do don't move to Australia. You guys have it easy. Check these links:
http://www.bigpond.com/broadband/access/cable/plans/ That's the biggest ISP
http://cable.optusnet.com.au/pricing.html
That's the second biggest.
Everyone else rents line from them anyway. Basically broadband in this country sucks. If you can get it, and that's not even certain in capital cities, you pay through the nose.

See, now I want to bitchslap the people who complain about the fact THEY exceeded their allotted data transfer, and that we charged 'em an extra $30 for 200 gigs.
Good gawd.

But seriously I never noticed any caps in my MediaOne/ATT/Comcast/whoknowsnextweek broadband service but I don’t download anywhere close to the multi-gigs needed test if there is a cap.

| #14 Posted on 10.3.03 0253.39 | Can someone please explain to me what this is all about. Because I'm getting pressued also by my ISP (by mail and a few phone calls) for the last few months to upgrade my speed limit for only $5 a month, and it sounds great only 5 bucks. But the fine print talks about limited uploads and gigs. I'm such a computer moron I have no idea what this means
Please help, what does it mean and if I exceed it would I even know? LoL
