Gimmick: Anti-recall - urges a "No" vote on the recall...but encourages votes for himself just the same
Apropos: He's a public defender (get it?) - profile is here (co.contra-costa.ca.us), where somebody seems proud of the fact that he's attended the Sundance Film Festival
Logic: "I'm running because I'm opposed to the recall process. If elected, I would institute Gray Davis as my chief of staff. That would make him the de facto governor of California, the position to which he was duly elected."
Fool me once...: Capmagin slogan is "vote twice for democracy"
Donations reported: SOMEBODY got scammed out of $1,500 (recallwatch.lobbyingcentral.com)
Soundbites: Includes following section titles on front page:
OUR STATE DESERVES STABILITY, NOT STAR SEARCH
DEMOCRACY NOT HYPOCRISY
STOP THE HOSTILE TAKEOVER BY WEALTHY OPPORTUNISTS
THE ONLY CANDIDATE GRAY DAVIS CAN ENDORSE
Nice use of italics: "If you oppose the recall process, if you believe in the democratic principle of full and fair elections - vote for me."
More Davis Love (and I don't mean the golfer): "He won the governor's post in a full, free and fair election, and it would be wrong to replace him in some insane process that allows the 'Terminator' or a stripper or a comedian - or me - to win the highest office in the sixth largest economy of the world."
Altruism: Press release refers to candidacy as "Davis' lifeline"
Fence-sitter: "I'm not a fan or a supporter of Davis, but I am a supporter of due process."
Delusions of grandeur: "I'm assuming he will vote for me, too. Who else is he going to vote for?"
And Finally - THE DAVIS CAMP REACTS!:"I've never heard of the man," said Davis spokesman Nick Velasquez when asked about Mariano.
Vote for Paul Mariano - the "You Can Trust ME" candidate
TOMORROW: BUM FIGHTS

This is what it has sunk to. People using Dusty Rhodes expressions from the beginning of the NWO/WCW feud from '96.
Ok, so Ted Williams is decapitated now? What will his son do next, sell him to the Japanese dog food company that bought former Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand?
I have just read these all in one sitting and I am finding these absolutely hilarious, Chris!
But can you clarify for me Mr. Mariano's position? If he is opposed to the recall, can't he just encourage folks to vote against the recall and keep Davis?
His philosophy is that his 'legion of supporters' vote against the recall, but on the second question vote for him as an insurance policy. With the 135 candidates on the ballot, its theoretically possible that Davis gets recalled 51-49, and Mariano wins the governor's race with 1-2% of the vote (also, its theoretically possible I'll hit Powerball for 140 million on Saturday.) Thus, should Mariano's supporters fail to keep Davis as governor, they at least would have him to fall back upon should recall succeed.

I think that's the problem with ALL these anti-recall people who have their names on the ballot. "Well, gosh, of course you should vote NO on the recall....butjustincaseyoubettervoteformeaswell."
Honestly, now - if YOU ran this kind of campaign, and the people of the state were STUPID enough to elect you....would you REALLY want to just gracefully bow out and hand over the keys back to Davis? I can't really see ANYBODY turning down that kind of power once it's handed to them. Then there's also the fact that all the people who voted "yes" would probably form a lynch mob. ;-)
Yeah, I guess that was my point, too. If he's against this kind of recall election, how can he also being running for governor (shhh, just in case...)? It seems pretty hypocritical to me. Thanks for shedding some light.
