There are a few artists I'd like to get that aren't available in iTunes (AC/DC, for instance), but I'd like to not buy the CDs if possible.

I know iTunes does not handle WMA (Windows Media Audio) or Real Audio files - but beyond that, iTuns is pretty flexible. I currently use eMusic as my primary online store (which are MP3s). And I've used other services in the past, and, as long as they're not DRMed, you should be fine.
