Palpatine you are right that the number who go directly from VP to President is low. But you are leaving out the ones who go later. Nixon won 8 years later.
Also I would guess that Teddy Roosevelt would have won in 08 if McKinley hadn't been killed. And while I am certainly no fan LBJ would have been a strong canidate.
Personally I think that Veeps and Senators don't really make strong canidates but both parties especially the DNP seems to like them. Governors have a better track record in the last 50 years.

Well, 13 Veeps have gone straight from Veep to President (4 after assassination, 4 after natural death, 4 after being elected, one after the Prez quit). That's 13 out of 42, or approx. 31% If you count Nixon (the only President who was V.P, then a private citizen, then President), it's 14 out of 42, or 33.3%.

I'm leaving the current administration out of this calculation, as we don't know how it'll finish out. Note to the Justice Department - that statement was in no way meant to imply that I favor the assassination, death or resignation of the President. I love America!!!

The other way to look at it is that 14 of the 45 Veeps have gone on to become President, or about 31%.

Now, that might not seem like THAT good of odds, but if you told any politician in America "I've got a job for you that'll give you a 1 in 3 shot of becoming president one day" I can guarantee you that even if the job was Presidential Fluffer, every one of them would take it.

See that was my basic point. For some unknown reason political parties think that Veeps pretty much automatically make the next available Presidential canidate. But I can't really see what Cheney brings the GOP in 08. He will be old and still have a heart problem. Never mind what the average American thinks of him. Dump his ass and pick someone younger with less baggage.

Cheney has never expressed an interest in being President. And we have debated who would be the '08 GOP nominee ad naseum in another thread.

If you have no interest in being President, you have no business being vice-president. That's kind of the point of the whole office.

Actually, its a higher number of VP's, as off the top of my head Nixon had 2 VP's(Agnew and Ford), Jackson had 2 (Calhoun and Van Buren), and FDR had 3 (I forget, Wallace, Truman).
Also, Jefferson was Adams VP only because of the manner electoral votes were counted up until the 1800 election fiasco.
If you take out the death elements, its still only 2 people in 200 years that have been VP and then succeeeded the President they served for. Not the best odds in the world.

You're forgetting that before the 22nd (I think) amendment was passed in (again, I think) 1970, when Veeps succeded the President upon his death, the new President (former Veep) didn't have a veep of his own. That's how you get to 45 veeps despite the multples.

FDR's first veep was John Nance Garner of Texas, who was best known for the saying "the vice-presidency ain't worth a bucket of warm spit." Although I'm currently reading Tip O'Neil's autobiography, and he attributes that quote to LBJ and substitutes "piss" for "spit."

Garner probably also gets the title for "most pissed off guy ever" when FDR decided to run for a third term.

25th Amendment, 1967: 22 was the 2-term limits and passed in 1951, so year were in the ballpark on the number.

Sounds like Gray could've been worse than Arnold ever was. Sorry to repost the long story but there was no permanent link to the story and I thouhgt it was important to share, especially considering the righteous indignation coming from Gray Davis.
