What a joke. I like Tim Robbins as an actor, and even though Susan Sarandon should stick to silence, what a dumb, dumb move by Dale Petroskey from the HOF. He should have just gone on with the tribute, and if someone puts their foot in their mouth, at least the HOF wouldn't look stupid. Why not just cancel this event, and honor Field of Dreams?

Anyone catch Sportcenter last night (6pm EST version) - there was some blonde interviewing Robbins, and she was awful. I haven't seen such poor interviewing since Ahmad Rashad. Talk about lobbing someone some friggin softballs...

Whether you agree or disagree with Tim Robbins, he came out of that SC interview looking golden, while the HOF and Petroskey looked like complete donkeys. It's really a shame that people have to involve politics in stuff like this.

I missed the SC interview. I agree that it is a shame that politics are dragged into sports and into entertainment in general. I don't care what actors think about anything but acting, nor do I care what athletes think about anything other than their sport. That aside, although I love the movie "Bull Durham", I feel that "Field of Dreams" or even "A League of Their Own" would be as good if not better suited to be tied to the Hall of Fame.

I do some work w/ the HOF, and they have at times featured both of those films - what with the anniversary, it just happens to be Bull Durham's turn.

Robbins' poilitics aside, why couldn't they have just asked him nicely to leave politics out of it and just talk about baseball? Robbins seems like a reasonable guy. It is the baseball hall of fame, and all.

I met Robbins at a Jays game back in '97. We were literally sitting in the row in front of him, quoting "Bull Durham" lines for the first 3 innings of the game. He tapped me on the shoulder and said "Hey, thanks..."

I damn near flipped out. We talked to him for the rest of the game, even explaining to him why they were stopping play and bringing the fielders in (too much fog coming in off Lake Ontario meant they had to close the roof.)

He couldn't have been a nicer guy, and, politics and all, is a class act.

Whether it's hindsight or "playing politics," Robbins has been saying since this was announced that he had no intentions of talking about the war at the HOF and just wanted to "enjoy the moment with his boys."

I love how the HOF director is trying to downplay his working in the Reagan White House. Yeah, that's JUST as valid as working for National Geographic. RIGHT!

First Iraq is attacked because they MIGHT do something, and now Robbins and Sarandon are silenced because they MIGHT say something. Gotta love Republican logic.

BTW, as great a movie as Bull Durham is, I have to cite Bill Simmons' very valid criticism of it. Tim Robbins throws like a girl.

I don't think anyone comes out looking good out of this. For the HOF to cancel this over politics is silly. However, for Robbins to bitch and moan over this like he has some God-given right to be honored is equally annoying. You know, it's OK, most of us will never be honored my the HOF. Get over it.

I don't think Robbins is bitching and moaning. I think he's raising a valid stink over why he and his wife were purposely excluded from a ceremony honouring a film that they played huge roles in.

I don't think the HoF thought this through. At least Robbins and Sarandon can talk. Without them, that means more speech time for Costner and (shudder) Robert Wuhl.

It's not like anyone said he has a God-given right. He got the invitation, and then they pulled it for no good reason whatsoever. Wouldn't you be pissed if someone did that to you?

Yes I'd be pissed, but Robbins is going around stating that his 1st Amendment rights have been violated. ??? He's still allowed to talk, I haven't seen anyone duct tape his mouth shut. Freedom of speech says nothing about being able to speak anywhere you want.

If the HOF really thought that Robbins and Sarandon we're going to get into an area that they didn't want to be associated with, they are perfectly within their rights to withdraw the invitation. That being said...I agree, they would have looked better if they simply asked them to keep politics out of it. That way IF Robbins went on a diatribe, he comes off bad instead of the hall.

This way everyone looks bad. The HOF looks intolerant, and Robbins comes off as ignorant for ranting about his "freedom of speech".

I would probably be more miffed than anything, miffed about why they invited me when they apparently didn't want me there in the first place. But still, I would rather be uninvited than be somewhere where I wasn't wanted. So I would get over it, which is what I suggested that Robbins should do. But instead he goes on a national TV tour to bitch and moan (I saw the ESPN interview, he WAS bitching and moaning, my words, or raising a stink, your words, six on one, half a dozen of the other as far as I'm concern) about how his freedom of speech rights were being violated, though by the mere fact that he was appearing on national TV everywhere, he was proving that in fact his freedom of speech rights were NOT be violated. Thus I must conclude that if Robbins thinks his rights are being violated, he must believe he has a God-given right to be honored by the HOF. Because that is all he has lost here.

Obviously the best thing for the HOF (as I stated, they were being silly as well) was to simply ask the actors to keep in mind the reason they were there, the movie, and let them know this was not a forum for their own personal agendas. (Sadly, this SHOULD be a given, but given the fact that actors have a tendency to think that anytime there is a microphone in their face, they may use it for anything they so choose, ie Oscars, Grammies, etc., I can certainly understand the HOF's concern.)

Or in Random, under the topic "Bull Durham is the most overrated movie about baseball ever."

Not enough baseball in the film, too much of that hag Sarandon.

Ah, but you see, Bull Durham is one of those sneaky chick flicks disguised as a sports movie. This is a rather ideal choice, in fact, for when you're trying to get your girlfriend to watch something that doesn't involve Julia Roberts. [/bitter]
