With the stimulus check coming, and my mother-in-law's continued computer problems, I've decided to get a new computer, and give her our current one (which has no problems, and I know how to fix anything that comes up).

So my question is, would I be better off getting a computer from Best Buy, Circuit City, or somewhere similar or get a friend of mine to build me a computer?

Is it relatively the same price to build your own vs buying pre-built?

I used to build my own, but have just bought the last two outright, largely because you can get ones more than satisfactory for most users cheaply.

The only upgrades I've done to my current and previous ones were upping the memory.

Unless you're heavy into video editing or gaming, I think that would probably be the case for most users.

For most basic computers, it's going to be comparable, if not cheaper just to buy the computer.

If you're talking about some special items like exotic, water cooled cases, or extra large power supplies, then you might be interested in the build your own route. Stuff like that can get pricy either way.

This page says VLC can sometimes work. There is a Mac version at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html . That's about all I can find in a cursory search.
