The Sports Guy from ESPN does a 1 hr interview with WWE Champ (I still laugh at that) The Miz:

http://espn.go.com/espnradio/player?rd=1#/podcenter/?id=5875033&callsign=ESPNRADIO&autoplay=1

I still think he's overrated and won't be bank, but this is a good interview and I REALLY wish that WWE would show more of this personality on their TV. THIS is the guy I would watch.

Kevin Kelly: "Mr. Austin, would you like to comment on Wade Keller's Take that endorsing the XFL hurts your anti-authority character?"

Steve Austin: "Oh shit, he actually said that? I thought the boys in the back were ribbing me!"

Kelly: "No, he really said that. Did they tell you the part about you sitting in the stands, looking all skeptical?"

Austin: "AHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah... oh man that was too much."

He came off great in this interview. Even if you don't like the Miz or think he can be a top star, you have to see why the WWE got behind him. He sounds like a huge fan and a great company guy.

It's a great interview, but how can Simmons have forgotten completely that Jericho ever held the top belt? He was the first to hold BOTH world titles. A shocking mental gaffe.

Miz gave a great talk, and I enjoyed learning the progressions of his finisher.

I'm anxious to hear it, knowing it could never, eeeeever be as bad as the Shawn "ummmmm" Michaels "ummmmm" one. I really though HBK would be able to think on his feet a little quicker than that.

He was as casual a fan as you could be for almost all of the 90s and 00s, IIRC. He did WrestleMania running diaries and that was about it.

EDIT: The podcast was really good.

I really enjoyed the podcast, as I've kept an eye on Mizanin since his Real World days, through the challenges, then Tough Enough, and now the WWE. Great that he talked about all those stages, and how much tougher he had it coming from the reality TV world.

A Simmons-Jericho podcast would be entertaining.

I don't think it's that easy to effortlessly banter during an interview if you're talking to a stranger on a cel phone.

My favorite part is when he was describing his finishers. This has always been my philosophy on finishers. If you can't do your finisher on The Big Show, it's not a good finisher.

Great interview, I forgot all about his horrible botching of the Raw diva search when he first debuted, and JBL constantly berating him on air.

It's amazing that he is the champion now. Miz fought through much adversity, I can't hate the guy. Plus I was sick of seeing Cena and Orton at the top, Miz is the polar opposite.

This was probably my favorite wrestler interview of all time. Miz gives an incredible amount of detail and insight on his path to the championship. He went back and forth between kayfabe (sorta) and totally breaking kayfabe.

I love that he gave exact dollar figures on how much he was earning on the Real World, during the challenges, and while he was touring the country giving speeches and hosting parties. I don't think I've ever heard ANY reality star give that kind of info before.

Great, great interview. Between his karaoke performance on Lopez Tonight and this interview with Bill Simmons, I can fairly confidently say Miz is my favorite personality in all of wrestling right now.

Pretty sure the Miz just showed exactly why he should be the face of the company. He came off really well, Simmons's tendency to talk over his guests notwithstanding, was informative and articulate, and certainly sounds relatable based on his career's story. As long as he's willing to put in the work (which is probably the most important part), and he is, I'd feel comfortable with him representing WWE.

And yeah, StingArmy, there were parts of the podcast that were total works, but this also seems to be the right environment nowadays to blur that line. (Note to Russo: THAT'S how you do it properly. Use kayfabe when it makes sense in reality and gets the character over.)

I listened to the first half of the podcast in the car this morning and it is pretty "awesome."

i.e. - talking about how Miz 'picked his spot and timing to take on Orton, giving him a fighting chance' and not saying "I was booked to do this/that" but still talking about how he and the writers work on promos?

P.S. - There is also another great, mainstream article on The Miz's rise via the AP/SI here:

Not to spoil, but Miz also maintained kayfabe while discussing Danielson and Riley.

Thanks for the link, enjoyed it tremendously.

While I'm getting used to (and liking) Miz as WWE Champ, hearing Freddie Prinze, Jr. referred to as a producer/director for the WWE blows my mind every time.

Droz made a good point on WWE.com that fans wouldn't vote for Big Daddy V because they feel he would squash CM Punk, and suggested to vote for Miz if you're a CM Punk fan. I guess that worked.
