Nine guys left from the 2004 title team: Schilling, Wakefield, Timlin, Foulke, Varitek, Ramirez, Ortiz, Nixon and Youkilis.
On paper it's a great deal for the Sox, since Wily Mo is basically coming in as a major upgrade from Gabe Kapler (unless Nixon gets traded before Opening Day). It just sucks that we had to get rid of a guy like Arroyo (who I like) to do it.

The Red Sox won't give no trade clauses. Closest they come (outside of guys becoming 10-5) is putting clauses in contracts that if they give someone else a no-trade clause, a no trade clause would kick in on that players contract. Varitek is an example of that.
Good trade for Boston. Would rather have dumped Clement, but they picked Arroyo (or, for those who follow the wit and wisdom of that noted 21st century philosopher Tim McCarver: Brandon Arojo) up off of waivers from Pittsburgh, used him in the back of the rotation for 2 years, and flipped him for a right handed power hitter who is there likely right-fielder of the future. Doubtful Arroyo would do more than the 14 wins/4.50'ish ERA he had last season, so the Red Sox bought low and sold high. The way Arroyo struggles against left-handers, he is really going into a bad ballpark. He has shown he can pitch a strong game and is a tough pitcher, but he also can put together a string of 2.2IP/7R/6ER/8H/2BB/2HBP games together. | Crimedog
