First the matches and promos with HBK, and now, last night's promo with Benoit. Wow. It had to be something special if HHH of all people could get the fans to chant Benoit's name. I haven't heard somethng quite that intense from HHH in a while, and I LOVED IT!
It seems that some of his critics on the board liked it too. So I ask you, when and what was the last time we had a HHH promo like last night's? I don't know if I can call myself an "apologist" when it comes to HHH, but I know good stuff when I hear it, and last night was good stuff...so of course Shawn Michaels had to go and ruin it.... :-) Over to you, folks.
After a quarter of a century on this planet, there's three things I know for sure... 1)Ain't nothing like a Dirty Pair marathon on New Year's Eve. 2)I'd make a fine Mrs. HHH II. 3) I'd make an acceptable Mrs. Orton. 1400 reasons to luv me! | Promote this thread! | | Wpob

But let's not forget Shane used the same type of promo on jericho to get him over. Shane was just a little more subdued. Also, didn't HHH do the same type of promo on Booker before Wrestlemania last year? It seems like he is recycling promos, but this one was good. As for his last good promo, much like all things HHH, I would have to say before his quad injury.

It was like he was stuck in a groove and couldn't figure out how to get to his next point, so he just rambled for an hour or so. He seemed to have no emotional connection to Benoit either - it might as well have been a cardboard cutout of Benoit there for as much as HHH put into it. Pretty shoddy, I thought.
I think HHH can bring good things to the table when he wants to, but I think they need to get the mic away from the guy.
Then to have Shawn come out and do the same for another five minutes really tested my patience. I turned RAW off once HBK starting ranting.
Personally if they wanted to get to the point where they had Michaels mixed in there, they could have gone in numerous other, more creative, directions than what we got last night. Big disappointment after what was a pretty decent first third. | ShotGunShep

I disagree...I'm not completely on board with the idea of a 3-way, but if they are GOING to do it, it's absolutely imperative they put some heat between Shawn and Benoit. If it was a scenario of the two top contenders ganging up on Trip, if Trip were to win that match it would make both Benoit and Michaels look pathetic that they couldn't beat Trip 2-1 (See 2001 Ring, King of the). So if you make it a 3-way feud, then there's an added reason for him to be there, and to do that, they had to give Shawn and Benoit friction in the storyline.
And by the way, I thought Trip's promo was excellent. Like everyone else, I've heard him ramble for 10 minutes with no point before, and this bore no resemblance.

I absolutely agree that last night's promo was fantastic. He's become really good at setting up a big match and giving it a main-event feel.
My question is, where was all this mic work when he was a face? Back then, it was all catch phrases, all the time.

I should have been clearer - I meant the whole "contract ceremony" idea. It has been used much too often recently and I think they could have conveyed the same ideas about there being friction between Benoit and Michaels in much better ways than pulling this old chestnut out. Especially since I don't believe it was staged very well.

And please, don't tell me we're including that long-winded "you were the horse that got knocked out of the cart but I was the horse behind the cart, and I am the cart, and I was always the horse and the cart and you will know what I always knew you've always known we had to know----That I am the cart!" as a good promo.
The Royal Rumble match wasn't good either. It was two guys bleeding and standing around resting.
So other than the shawn match on RAW, he hasn't exactly been starting a career year. Last night's promo was good, but it being "great" is all a matter of opinion. It was far from great. Too long-winded for my tastes, and Shawn's little promo afterwards was just as effective because it showed more emotion, and got to the point. The only person that came out of that situation not looking good is Chris Benoit. And here's hoping they'll fix that come next Monday...

I don't think there is ANY other wrestling in Oregon. I think a tiny fed just got started in the Portland area last year, but that is it. Benoit's name isn't that easy to chant. It just doesn't roll of the tongue like, Gooooooooldberg.

Maybe I'll have to see it again, but I thought it was his usual rambling, dragging like promo, maybe slightly less. People seem to be blaming HBK for ruining the segment. If there's one thing about HBK, is that his rants are never HHH-like. His promos are always to the point and with strong conviction, lacking all the directionless verbal masturbation. This night was no exception. Of course since he often gets less mic time than his "buddy", its easy to conclude that the promo is therefore inferior, useless or "segment killing". Why is his effort being attacked so?
That aside, what did people expect? Considering how strong his role remains in this angle, did you think honestly that they wouldn't put him out there? It was a brief minute and a superkick and people act like he rained all over something that wasn't his business. He's still involved the angle therefore has every right to be out there! Should he be? Hell, I'm not so fond of the three-way main-event idea myself and am more for the WM X type deal. But storywise, HBK wasn't out of place out there. Unwelcome by crowd probably due to the Benoit "overcoming the odds"(and tweener like booking of Shawn)deal, but not out of place. | Madame Manga

He makes his point. Then he makes it again. Then he makes it ten more times using exactly the same words in case you didn't get it the first or second time. There are few wrestlers whose promos I enjoy less than Triple H's, and last night was no exception. Maybe he just adores the sound of his own voice, or they are giving him too much time to fill and he can't edit himself down to the essentials. I tend to tell Hubby to mute the sound after the first thirty seconds.
HHH has been taking himself and his character way too seriously, IMO; he comes across to me as ponderous, redundant, overstuffed and monotonous. There's not much sense of menace or intelligence, unless he plans to bore his opponents to death. What happened to the deliciously evil sense of humor this guy used to have? I'm not asking him to drop trou in the ring and moon the crowd (there's been quite enough of that for one lifetime, thank you) but when the guy can muster a genuine grin once in a while, I enjoy watching him much more.

If Benoit loses at Mania, it proves Helmsley's point and makes Benoit look weak. Those types of "You can't win the big one" promos only work if the underdog wins.
I think that's what I hate about HHH. Hell, he can win all the time, I can deal with that, but, when he buries you as completely worthless and undeserving, then, beats you clean, it totally destroys that wrestlers credibility IMO.
I know HHH wants to be Ric Flair, but at least Flair made his oppoosition look like the better man before "sneaking" out a win. If Trips wants to be this "I can overcome all the odds cause I'm the best" type of Wrestler, then he should turn face, because Heels are supposed to look vulnerable.

It probably didn't help that Triple H was chanting it in the most awkward way possible. It was like when you tell someone a phone number, you should say it like: 579-25-36 But he was saying it like: 57-92-53-6 I almost thought he was fighting the crowd while doing it.

As far as H v. Booker at last year's mania goes, I think that it was Hunter who got shafted at the event...What, their match was in the middle of the card?!? I know people will disagree, but Booker's not at H's level, take em on their best days and Hunter comes out on top ten times over.
Also, H had Flair at ringside cheating for him, that does not make it clean and Trips had to be helped to the back by said Nature Boy when the match was over. Booker's momentum fizzled out because he got injured soon thereafter. | Madame Manga

Strange to say, I sometimes step out of the room during Raw. If HHH is doing some decent promos, I'm glad to hear it. I hope he improves his ratio; maybe I can catch a good one soon. It's been a while, unfortunately.
