Help a brother out.

What's the 21 patch on the Braves Uniform? Can't think of anyone who wore 21 that died - was that Warren Spahn?

(Not Bob Kohm)

In the context of baseball, the use of drugs hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, the use of alcohol hurts only the player. In the context of baseball, womanizing hurts whom? Maybe the wife of the player? In the context of baseball, felonies are crimes against society, not against baseball. In the context of baseball, gambling is the only crime against baseball.

Gambling, in the context of baseball, is a capital offense and Rose has richly earned-- hell, he agreed to-- his death sentence. Let him hang.

Still a household name amongst a lot of baseball fans in the Badger State...now that was a pitcher.

Here's ESPN's Jayson Stark looking back at Spahnie's career. (If that don't work...try this ESPN Classic web page.

And some of Spahn's quotes...man, that's baseball wisdom. (BrainyQuote.com)

Weird fact...when Spahnie won his 300th game at age 40 back in 1961, the Braves catcher behind the plate...a rookie by the name of Joe Torre.

There's a nice Warren Spahn slideshow and lots of other content on this Journal-Sentinel tribute page, too.

(EDIT: Figures...Post #1001 is an old-school topic...too bad #1000 (The W) was such a sad one.)

Thought it might be Spahn. I was too young to ever see him work, of course. But Johnny Sain was Bouten's pitching coach when he was traded to Houston in "Ball Four" and I was introduced to "Spahn, thenSain, then Dear Lord, please Rain!" and remember reading about Spahn at that time. I wonder why there's nothing on their web page about it.

of course, in actuality, it's Pete Rose. But he's out for another reason.
