Really solid show. Couple of gaffes, couple of scary spots, but overall very good.

ULTIMATE X MATCH FOR THE X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP
Alex Shelley vs. Chris Sabin vs. Suicide vs. Daniels vs. Homicide vs. champion The Amazing Red

D'Angelo Dinero was not present due to a family emergency. MCMG took his place, by dint of winning their match against Lethal Consequences before the show. Lots of craziness, including one of the scariest things I've ever seen: Daniels and Suicide fell (purposely) off the X cables and it looked like Daniels came down right on his head. Everyone was freaked out. Apparently he hurt (separated?) his shoulder but is mostly okay; he showed up at the press conference afterward.

Anyway, Red retained by dropping on the the cables from the metal support system above them (a change from previous X structures). Great spotfest but I can do without the scariness in the future.

TNA KNOCKOUTS TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
The Beautiful People vs. Taylor Wilde & Sarita

Super short. Wilde & Sarita retain with their Springboard Dropkick/German Suplex combo on Madison Rayne.

TNA LEGENDS CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
Hernandez vs. Eric Young vs. champion Kevin Nash

As I predicted, Young double-crossed Nash here -- Nash was going for a jackknife on Hernandez and Young rammed Hernandez's head into Nash's groin. Young pinned Nash (!) for the win. Nice finish and a better match than I anticipated.

FULL METAL MAYHEM FOR THE TNA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
Team 3D vs. Beer Money vs. British Invasion vs. champions Scott Steiner & Booker T

Here's the difference between Booker and Steiner: Booker hardly did anything and left halfway through in a stretcher spot (he's even too lazy to walk himself out!). Steiner worked hard, threw suplexes like there was no tomorrow, and went off a ladder and through a table to get taken out.

Team 3D got the IWGP belts (I assume so they can go drop them in Japan) and The British Invasion got the TNA Belts (with the help of Rob Terry, who press slammed Robert Roode out of the ring and through a table).

TNA KNOCKOUTS CHAMPIONSHIP
Awesome Kong vs. Tara vs. champion ODB

Pretty good, although marred by this weird thing where Tara was, I guess, "attacked" by a "fan" at ringside but we didn't actually see it and then Tara left and then she came back but didn't really do anything else worthwhile for the rest of the match. (Reportedly, the "fan" is Kim Couture.)

Raisha Saeed slid a chair in to Kong, who kicked it away; Saeed slid it back in. Kong went for the Awesomebomb on ODB (who had previously kicked out of the Implant Buster -- is that a first?) but ODB reversed it into a DDT on the chair for the pin -- which I think is also a first in that Kong didn't get pinned with a rollup.

MMA VS. TNA: SUBMISSION MATCH
"The Boss" Bobby Lashley vs. Samoa Joe

Also better than I anticipated; Lashley's growing on me, I have to admit. Lashley wins with a rear choke of some kind. Joe never tapped, so either he passed out (they never did the arm raise) or Hebner's being a jerk again. Taz seemed annoyed at the ending -- I think he said something about how Hebner can't "just decide" that Joe's submitted -- so I'm guessing there's an angle in there somewhere where Joe will complain that he didn't tap.

MONSTER'S BALL: HARDCORE EXTREME
Mick Foley vs. "The Monster" Abyss

Good hardcore match. Marred badly by a ref and/or Abyss screwup where the ref counted to three, and then there was a pause, and then Abyss kicked out.

Guest Ref Dr. Stevie stripped off his ref shirt immediately before getting Black Hole Slammed into a pile of tacks, which was considerate. They did a taser spot where there was a shower of sparks, which amused me enough that I forgave the over-use of the taser. Daffney tried to interfere and got chokeslammed off the turnbuckle through a plywood sheet covered in barb wire that was suspended between the ring apron and the guard rail. Daffney is CRAZY.

Abyss pinned Foley (moving Stevie's arm himself) after slamming Foley onto another barb wire board.

WRESTLING'S BEST VS. WRESTLING'S FUTURE
Main Event Mafia leader Kurt Angle vs. "The Blueprint" Matt Morgan

Pretty good. I think Morgan is fine, but I don't know if I'd go above that. This certainly wasn't as good as the Styles/Angle match on Impact. Angle won with a Victory Roll after the Angle Lock and Angle Slam failed to get him the win. Angle raised Morgan's hand afterward.

TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
"The Icon" Sting vs. champion "The Phenomenal" AJ Styles

Styles wins with a springboard splash -- may have supposed to have been a 450°, but Styles seemed a little loopy so he might have changed his mind at the last second. Ending was a little abrupt.

(Lots of wrestlers were wearing pink armbands in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but Styles was wearing Breast Cancer tights -- white and turquoise, with multiple pink ribbons designs -- it was something to behold.)

Styles called Sting back into the ring afterward and Sting gave a speech to the fans, telling them that he didn't know if he'd be back, but that the fans made him want to stay in the business forever.

Live from Irvine, California ...

First, one piece of non-wrestling business to get out of the way: Anteaters? Really??They have pictures of the anteater statue dressed in various garb. I'm going to have to find a shirt someplace tomorrow! (That's actually better than Banana Slugs. Gotta love the 70's.)

Anyway ... Fun show!! Very nice recap, Karlos.

Sounded like they were broadcasting the MCMG vs. Lethal/Consequences match someplace -- was it part of some sort of free preview? This was a lot of fun, & a great start to things!

Was that actually Joey Fatone doing preshow? Bizarre.

Zakk Wylde doing the national anthem was, at the risk of sounding Valley Girl, totally awesome! Not your mother's Lillian Garcia.

Ultimate X was excellent, & pretty much worth the cost of admission! Christopher Daniels was absolutely the MVP, with Suicide a close second. There were a couple of times I was wondering whether Daniels was damaged. From my angle, the Daniels landing looked more like a shoulder thing than landing on his head, so I wasn't too freaked out about it. Still sorry he got hurt!

Two different refs getting smooched by Lacey von Erich was pretty funny -- particularly when Earl dipped her, & then threw her out anyway. Match was short, which was fine.

Eric Young & Kevin Nash vs. Hernandez was pretty good! Nash's look at Eric when he nearly got the first pinfall was perfect. Hernandez really isn't that huge, but ha can damn well hit a beautiful Tope through the ropes. Eric pulling down Kevin's straps was hilarious. I this was a really fun match.

By all rights, the 4 way tag team thing should have been a total clusterfuck, but it wasn't at all. It might have been my second favourite match of the night! There was a lot going on, but they were shifting around the focus very well. The Rhino runin was fun, & served it's purpose. From my angle, I couldn't tell at all about what was going on with Booker -- that was just kind of strange. For pure entertainment value, I've gotta give big props to Bubba. For workrate & generally busting ass, I give it to Beer Money, & Roode in particular.

I also really enjoyed Tara/ODB/Kong. Kong even took some bumps, & I liked that she rejected the easy offer of the folding chair. The whole weirdness with the "fan from the crowd" was too odd. It didn't seem legit, but at the same time, it didn't really seem to make any sense. On the other hand, Tara sold it exceptionally well -- she looked totally pissed when she went backstage to "get checked out". In spite of the oddness, still a good, solid match.

I still don't get what it is about Samoa Joe that people seem to love. But the crowd was very pro-Joe, & didn't seem to give much of a damn about Bobby Lashley, whom I enjoy. (I don't get that either.) The match was good, & I didn't think it improper at all of Earl to call the match based on Bobby's chokehold on Joe. But if Tazz was selling it the other way, then I agree it's definitely going to lead to a long-term feud.

Abyss vs. Foley was not so much my kind of thing, but definitely was good for its genre. The star there was Daffney getting slammed through the barbed wire board. That probably got the most serious "holy shit" of the night.

Morgan vs. Angle was also good. Matt is very charismatic about working the live crowd. And Kurt, of course, is fantastic. Unfortunately, Kurt is so popular that he always gets a huge face reaction, even though he's the head of the bad guys -- this has to be tough for his face opponent. Still, I thought this was very good. They did a very intelligent job with the size difference, & I liked the story.

Sting vs. AJ was also very good. I like Sting, but I don't have the big emotional attachment to Sting that the old WCW faithful do. Still, I found it to be a good, solid, thoughtful match, & a good point for Sting to take a nice hiatus. It did seem a bit rushed at the end. And he clearly would have liked a little more time to talk at the end, but the camera guys were giving him a "wrap up" signal.

This was a very entertaining live show. Ten matches, no bullshit, & pretty much everything at least very good &/or very fun. I hate to have to say that this was a much better time than I've had at most of the WWE shows lately!

One thing TNA does have to get under control: They have to get the camera coverage onto their tron in the arena! There are always going to be blind spots for the live audience -- we feel left out if there's something major going on that we can't see! And that's only compounded when you book spots that are out of our view, like Abyss going off the stage & Foley going after him. Or Daffney going through the barbed wire on the other side of the ring. They had to know they'd need to give us the camera feed for some of those things, & they weren't at all on top of that.

For TNA's Wrestlemania, aside from being outside Orlando, this show wasn't much different from their usual offerings.

We got the usual spot-fest in the opening match, which may have been slightly better than ones in the past, but holy cow, stop with the death-defying stunts. You can have a good match without almost killing yourselves. I thought the Knockouts tag match was too short, actually. The Legends Title match did nothing for me. EY turning I didn't think made much sense; why would he risk the ire of Nash and the MEM even further? And since when does he care about the Legends Title? Not to mention the great camera shot (among many tonight) showing Nash's shoulder clearly up on the pin.

I thought the Full Metal Mayhem match lived up to its name and was pretty entertaining for a match of its kind. Some send-off Booker got. The Knockouts title match flow was hurt by Tara leaving, but I liked the finish. Lashley vs. Joe was OK, but really, neither man should've lost here. Sorry, but I've grown tired of the type of match Foley vs. Abyss participated in. The shock value of the tacks and all the crap wears off when you see it every month. Nothing redeeming for me about the match (thanks in part to the return of the lame taser). The final two matches were real good, no complaints about those.

Probably just out to screw Nash and the MEM even more, furthering the World Elite/MEM dissension storyline. He wants to prove World Elite's the dominant faction and the MEM's time is over, sooooo...

New for fall 2009: Moments In Random Quote Shame. From this post in 2004:

Well, why are we giving up THAT much for him? Rivers, this year's 3, and next year's 1 and 5? In the words of Anna Nicole Smith (according to Kathy Griffin), I don'like it. I would have rather seen us keep that pick and use it... on someone else (no, I don't know... maybe trade down) and try to get Losman late in 1 or early 2 (which wouldn't happen, thanks to the Bills).

I wouldn't be surprised if the World Elite is trying to win all the titles like MEM was previously in order to show their dominance. They now have the tag and Legends title and I wouldn't be surprised if Homicide is the next X Division champion. Now Bashir just needs to win the World Title!

Motor City Machine Guns wrestled on the PPV AND they've already been announced for a match on Impact! Two shows in a row?? Unbelievable!

The Beautiful People are just completely unwatchable now with Lacey instead of Love. Get them off the screen please.

I am going to pick-up on DVD if the extras are worth it. Its kinda of weird show to determine if I should get the replay since most of the matches run the gambit of being lousy to great. The most polarizing one seems to Foley/Abyss. I would have preferred to see Lethal Consequences or MCMG in the tag belts since British Invasion is boring the hell out of me. They could thrown out them in as a six man tag with Joe and Lashley. I am very curious to see Impact since it seems that the reset button has been hit and if the rumor about Booker is true or not.

Well the bad news (for you, I like the Invasion) is that the British Invasion are tag champs. The good news is the MCMG match on Impact I mentioned is MCMG vs. Lethal Consequences for a tag title shot at Turning Point so it looks like one of them will finally get in the tag title mix.

Also announced on the website is Styles/Daniels (guess he is okay to wrestle) vs. Nash/Joe, British Invasion vs. Beer Money, Kong vs. Saed and Homicide vs. Red. Could be a great show if they give the matches time.

Suicide not only hit the Flux Capacitor, but also was involved in a similar spot with Daniels to a previous Ultimate X. I liked that.

If they had a promtion, they'd probably decide to team up and beat everyone else in the company in a huge 8 team battle royal or something.
