Having never been to Boston, I'm just curious of something...What do most Boston sports fans consider the 'pecking order' of Boston sports teams up there to be...Which team gets the most press, and riles the fans up the most...Just a silly little thing I'm curious about. This would be my guess, in order...

1. Red Sox
2. Celtics
3. Bruins
4. Pats

Is that even remotely close? Allow me to fill you in on MY region...

1. Titans
2. Titans
3. Titans
4. Predators (light years behind the Titans however)
5. Braves baseball

Football season is a g'damn CIRCUS down here. I wish there were more hoops fans down here, but unfortunately there's not. They're in Kentucky, and North Carolina, but not here in Tennessee...

I would also love to see what folks from other regions (Cali, Texas, Chicago, wherever) consider their 'pecking order' of sports teams as well. I'd love to see if there's any glaring regional "tendencies" (ex. South is football country, the north/Canada is hockey country) or whatever...

Now mind you, this has just recently changed for Cleveland.

1) Browns
2) (tie) Indians, Cavaliers
3) Ohio State

Previously, the Indians took advantage of hitting the apex of their championship run while the Browns left town. Make no mistake about it though, this is a football town. Now the Tribe would have been a solid second place, but with their rebuilding and the almighty James in place, the Cavs have definitely made their move in the mindset of the town.

Well, I haven't lived in MA for years now so I'm going to defer a bit to those who do (redsoxnation, I'm looking at you). For me personally, these days (post Super Bowl win and Game 7) it's Sox first, then Pats, Celts and Bruins. Depending on the season, these can change a little, but that's generally how my loyalties lie and also those of the Boston fans I know.

I would say (in terms of media coverage) the Patriots and Red Sox are in a dead heat for first place, with the Celtics - sadly - a distant third, and the Bruins WAAAAAAAY at the bottom of the heap in fourth place; at this point I'd be willing to bet the Revolution are ahead of them, sad to say.

Of course, the return of Antoine (with all the accompanying venom being spewed) perked things up a little for the C's, and with the big win over Dallas, some renewed interest might be forthcoming.

Wow...I had no idea the Pats were so popular up there. Is it just because they're having a great season or is it like this every year?? I don't know why I assumed that Boston took their hockey and hoops more seriously than football.

You left out Volunteer football on your Nashville list ... they get waaaaaay more press and support than the Vandy football squad.

Ok THANKS, but I didn't include Vandy in there either...and I was mainly talking about pro sports...and Vandy basketball (in the good years) gets just as much press as Tennessee football anyways.

I think UT football gets much more press than Vandy Hoops (in the good years) by far ... though I'm not knocking Vandy's hoops squad ... they are looking to heavily contend in the SEC this year.

Don't worry folks, chuckc14 and I are not "flaming" each other ... we work together so we have the Tennessee/Vanderbilt discussions/arguments on a daily basis ...

Any Western Wieners out there want to participate in my little "experiment" here? I'm starting to wonder if this whole country is in fact "football country".

I'd be interested to hear from some Kentucky, Indiana, or North Carolina wieners...surely we can find some "hoops first" fans there...

Miami, FL...

1) Dolphins
2) Hurricanes
[distant]
3) Marlins*
4) Heat
5) Panthers

*Would be 4th were it not for the World Series AND the fact that the Heat has gone in the tank the last few years.

But football owns that town, and there were some years in Miami (during the years where the Dolphins were mediocre and the Hurricanes were dominant) that UM actually outranked the Fins in the pecking order (probably from 1987 to 1990 that was the case)

But just for fun, let's contrast that with my NEW home of Tallahassee....

1) Florida State
2) Florida A&M
3) Florida State
4) Florida State
5) Florida State
6) Florida State
7) The Atlanta Braves

Here in Boston its
1. Red Sox
2. Pats (its been the Pats now since 1997 at least really since Parcels has been here)
3. Celtics a far far distance 3rd
4. Bruins a rock bottom 4th.

People could care lest about college sports here. And if you ever want to see the most over hyped sporting event in the history of the world just come up here during the Boston Marathon. You get 20 pages in the paper that no one reads and they close down the city. The only good thing about it is that its the only day in the year you will get a baseball game that starts in the AM.

I'd LOVE to participate, if only we had a damn football team in the first place. Geez.

As far as "hoops first" goes, the Lakers are obviously the #1 sports team here in LA. I dont watch baseball or Hockey, so I couldnt tell you much about the Kings (NHL), Ducks, Angels, or Dodgers.

And on a final note, I have never in my life met an adult Clippers fan.

Hmmmm. For Seattle, I'd say it goes like this:

1. Mariners
2. Husky football
3. Sonics (but this one is falling...)
4. Seahawks (and this one is rising...)
5. The Hydroplane races at Seafair (which I'll NEVER "get")
6. Husky women's basketball
7. Gonzaga men's basketball (I know they're in Spokane but they have to go here)
8. WSU football (they're in Pullman but they go here, they might actually be as high as #5)
9. Husky men's basketball (Zzzzzzzzzzz...)

EDIT: When I first moved here in 1991 it went (1) UW football by a huge margin, then (2) Seahawks on their way down to the bottom, (3) Sonics as they hadn't started their mid-90s run, and waaaaaaaay down on the list would've been the Mariners, routinely filling the Kingdome to 20% capacity. The Cougs sucked then too, but so did Husky hoops.

I'd have to agree with everything he said. Although, since all the trades Danny Ainge has made, the Celtics have been getting a lot of talk here lately.

The funny thing to me is, its December, the Patriots are 12-2, and all everyone wants to talk about is the Red Sox. That shows this is a Red Sox town first and foremost.

Personally though, I put the Bruins ahead of the Celtics, but I have been a hockey fan as far back that I can remember. But ever since they stopped spending any money, they have falling off severly here.

And another good thing about the marathon is that we get Monday off and it's usually my first trip to the golf course of the year. :)

During the Bird era, I'd say the Sox were 1a and the C's 1b. For most of my life the Bruins and Sox were the top teams. Right now I'd say it's this...

1. Sox
2. Pats
3. C's
4. B's

You want hoops first? Here in North Carolina is the list:

1)UNC/Duke
2)NC State
3)Wake Forest (Wake fans are pretty hard to find though)
4)Virginia/Maryland
5)Clemson/Florida State
6)Carolina Panthers
7)Atlanta Braves
8)Carolina Hurricanes

College basketball is key. College football is not. The Panthers and Hurricanes do good business in their towns, though.

Oh, and in Charlotte they'll probably support their new NBA team like crazy, but I'm not sure. The whole Hornets thing kinda soured them.

Well, in Pittsburgh, the list goes something like this:

1. Larry Fitzgerald
2. Steelers
3. Pitt Football
4. Pitt Mens Bball
5. High School Football (can be as high as second)
6. Penguins
7. Pirates

That list changes sometimes...make no mistake, this is always going to be a football town, and when the Steelers are good, which is usually every year, the place is freaking rabid for them. But give them a little bit of a down year, give Pitt its highest profile player in 20 years, and have the Pitt basketball team as good as it is, then, well, you've got competition.

And by the way, seeing as this is the basketball forum, what's the deal with the lack of love for Pitt? I will be the first to admit that they could play the school for the blind in non-conference and it would be a step up from most of the teams they play, but c'mon.

Also, I know they haven't looked all that impressive at times, but this has never been a team to blow people out by ridiculous margins. The Pitt hallmark is to beat good and bad teams by 16 points, every time.

Some people say they lost a ton when Brandin Knight graduated--granted Knight was a great player, but in Carl Krauser they gained a better shooter, an almost as good defender, and a guy that is growing into just as good a leader as Knight was. Additionally, they still have Julius Page, Jaron Brown, Chevy Troutman, and they made up for the loss of Ontario Lett with Chris Taft, who only happens to be bigger, stronger, faster, and better than Lett. Think Chris Wilcox, only much much better.

So with all that in mind, what gives? why don't they get any respect?

Rant over.
