Have to agree with mskj here. As soon as you heard the big chants for Angle you could kind of see this was a pretty funky crowd.

Maybe it wasn't racism, maybe it was the crowd seeing the inevitable, but it seemed to me a disservice for all the stuff Rock has done in the last few months. The whole booing the Rock thing just got me on that train of thought as it did with my other friend who was there with me. I know the WWF doesn't know how a crowd was going to react, so I don't blame them.

I do think the crowd should rout for whoever they want to, but damn that was just cold. As I see other net sites have post match reports come in, I see the NYers basking in the glow of their work. It makes me kind of sick.

A Fan- I hope the NY fans don't mind if a few PA fans get in the way of their fun at Survivor Series as we boo the hell out of Brock.

Rock Interview From WWE.com
============================================================
Interview with The Rock
by Phil Speer

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Aug. 25, 2002 -- It was a bittersweet evening for The Rock, but certainly not because many of the fans in Nassau Coliseum cheered for his opponent, Brock Lesnar. As the Great One addresses right off the back in this interview, he feeds off the crowd, whether they’re with him or against him. No, the reason the night was bittersweet is because The Rock is off to Los Angeles Monday to shoot his next movie, tentatively titled “Helldorado.” So after an interview with “Access Hollywood” today, and after an unforgettable match with Brock Lesnar, which saw the “Next Big Thing” become the new WWE Undisputed Champion, The Rock will appear tomorrow morning at a Smackdown Your Vote! rally in Manhattan, and then catch a charter to Hollywood. That meant The Rock was saying his goodbyes today to dozens of World Wrestling Entertainment Superstars and staff, who he won’t be seeing for the next four months … or perhaps longer.

WWE.com: Did you hear the crowd out there tonight? What was your reaction?

The Rock: Let’s just stick with my reaction, because I certainly hear them. And I work that way, by listening to them. I thought it was unbelievable in a great way. I absolutely love that. I thrive off that energy and that vibe. Just as jacked up and geeked as I get when they’re behind me, I do the same when they’re against me. And they know that I thrive off that. I’ve always thought that, boo me or cheer me, that’s your hard-earned dollar that you’ve spent. You have every right to do whatever you want. I will continue to entertain on both ends of the fence.

WWE.com: What did you think about the match?

Rock: I thought the match was tremendous. I loved the fact that we could go out there and follow all these other matches -- everyone on the card from top to bottom had tremendous matches -- was a testament to Brock’s ability to go out there and perform the way he did. And we had talked about this – Pat Patterson, myself and Vince had talked about the possibility of the crowd going the other way. It was tremendous. My hat’s off to Brock. I thought he did a tremendous job tonight.

WWE.com: What do you attribute that reaction to? Is it a New York thing? I remember SummerSlam ‘98 when you wrestled Triple H, and the crowd cheered for you even though you were the bad guy.

Rock: I don’t think it’s necessarily a New York thing as much as it is an attitude thing. It’s like two bulls clashing up against each other because, The Rock is all attitude. It’s typical in the entire northeast that the audience is very attitudinal. That’s why it’s just a New York thing. It’s Northeast attitude. But I don’t break. You won’t break me. And I’m going to wink at you all the way through the match.

WWE.com: I’ve noticed you’ve given a lot of hugs and handshakes today. How hard is it for you to leave?

Rock: It’s difficult because I love this business. I love wrestling. I grew up in it. That’s why I came back a month and a half ago. I’ve been pulling double duty. I haven’t had a day off since the day I came back. I’ve done it because I believe in the direction that the company’s going. I believe in what we’re doing with Brock. You know what I mean?

WWE.com: Besides Brock, who do you look to step up in your absence?

Rock: I don’t know. Guys around the locker room know within themselves who needs to step up, who needs to work their ass off to grab the brass ring. But if I start naming names, there’s five other guys who I should name. It’s like, “You didn’t name me.” You’re trying to get me in trouble!

WWE.com: When will you be back?

Rock: I don’t know when I’ll be back. The movie will take me into next year, into the first quarter of next year. So I don’t know.

WWE.com: Will you continue to go by “The Rock” in your movies? Or will you switch to Dwayne Johnson? I know there’s been some talk about that.

Rock: Yeah, we have. But I’m The Rock. There can’t be but one Rock.

WWE.com: OK, my last question is, how about those Miami Hurricanes?

Rock: I hate like hell always to start off as No. 1 because they’ve got that big bulls eye on them. I hate that on one token, but on the other hand, I wouldn’t want it any other way. So we’ve got a big bulls eye on our chest. F*** it. Bring it.

I officially give the award for "Bizarro World Crowd" to Long Island, having beaten out old champion Philadelphia by a wide margin based on tonight's performance. You guys can pick up your fake statuette at the door.

I thought cheering Angle sort of made sense, because it's been catching on lately, but the crowd's reaction to Rocky was nothing short of astounding. And I mean that in a bad way.

Hey guys, booing the promotion's top face out of the building just to look smart and cool DOES NOT MAKE YOU SMART AND COOL! Get a clue, jackoffs, because you'll be lucky if Vince even graces you guys with a house show from now on, much less the 2nd biggest PPV of the year.

And if Rocky's reading this (which he obviously isn't), people naturally hate those on top. Go make a movie star out of yourself.

“We should love him for all the great stuff he's done for the company over the past few months.”

Uhh, sorry... come again? Maybe in the last two months or so, you mean? He came back shortly after Austin left, telling everybody who didn't like the way things were in WWE to “get the F out”--

Nevermind that Rocky himself had been gone for the better part of the last three months. Nevermind that Rocky took several months off after this year's WrestleMania and last year's WrestleMania.

Now he comes back for a couple of months, wins the WWE Undisputed Title in his very first PPV back (losing it the following month to Lesnar-- the Undisputed Title's been traded around more than a three-dollar whore ever since Jericho lost it) and he probably won't be back until early '03. Yet everybody's calling him the savior of WWE? Please. Maybe WWE should build up more guys who are actually going to be in this thing for the long haul, instead of letting Rocky main-event for a couple months before going off to film yet another movie. Eventually, the shit's going to hit the fan on this one, mark my words.

Given the fact that The Rock never seems to be around for extended periods of time anymore, it's nothing short of astounding to me that y'all are like, “GODDAMN THEM TO HELL FOR DARING TO BOO THE IMMORTAL GREAT ONE!”

As I said before the crowd has the right to boo who the hell they want. Even the Rock said this in the interview I posted above.

Where I disagree with you is that the Rocks absence is something which benefits the whole company because they get a cut of the box office of any film he is in. Plus it gets the company name out there. His going to film movies is something the company wanted to happen.

Austin on the other hand left everyone high and dry. Even if his complaints were legitimate and he definitley had a good case, they way he went about it was wrong. Not to mention what went on domestically with him.

Plus how many people in his, The Rocks, position would put over someone as cleanly as he did tonight while still in his prime. SO credit where credit is due.

Um, hello? You think the WWE is pissed off that the Rock is being a big movie star, earning them royalty money and positive mainstream exposure? You think they have a responsibility to let him take time out of his contracted service with them to go play movie star, if they weren't getting their own cut of it? Even when he's not onscreen, the Rock is doing FAR more for the company than almost anyone else on the roster.

And who else is an established babyface who could have played sacraficial champ to Lesnar at the second-biggest pay per view? Who else would guarentee buyrates with such a young, unproven challenger for the belt to contend with? The only name that really comes to mind right now is Hogan. Maybe face HHH if you're really desparate. But the fact is that Rock was the perfect transitional device for the belt.

Scott Keith's comparing this to the night Vader massacred Sting in 1992 and that sounds like a pretty good analogy to me. This will definitely make Brock's career, but the difference lies here:

In '92, the crowd was stunned that the unstoppable babyface in his prime was squashed so convincingly.

In '02, the idiot crowd cheered the babyface's massacre, thus taking some of the awe away.

To say Rocky's not doing the WWE good with his movies is ignorance. That's more money in the back for Vince McMahon and just keep this in mind: Rock does not NEED to come back! He can take his movie revenue and live a pretty good lifestyle without having to go through the hell of being on the road all the time, but he comes back because he loves the business. Not enough people realize or appreciate that.

OK, he makes Vince a shitload of money by making movies, and he gets WWE's name out there constantly.

Yet he still takes time off and doesn't wrestle for months at a time, and has the audacity to tell other people to get the F out upon his return after four months or so.

Yeah, he took that time off to make movies. And I'm not saying that WWE isn't banking it on Rocky's movie-making. But what I am saying is that these movies make Rock unavailable to wrestle for about six months out of every calendar year, yet he still gets the big pushes that other guys who wrestle twelve months a year could really use to help them get over.

I give Rocky credit for losing the title to Brock (and cleanly, too, which comes as a shock) but perhaps the Long Island crowd was booing him because they knew he was going to be gone for another four or five months? Then he'll come back, probably just in time to main-event at WrestleMania, and I guarantee you he'll be gone yet again. Yet everyone here seems to be worshipping the ground that The Rock spits on, and I think it's just a little bit ridiculous.

I think the negative reaction has a lot more to do with the Rock leaving to shoot movies again. One person on 411 Wrestling said there was a huge "You Sold Out!" chant. Rock didn't seem to have a problem with it, and said he even discussed this exact situation happening. Some of you are acting like the Long Island crowd just handed Jesus over to the Romans.

Good gravy, people are taking this a bit strongly. When someone has been a face forever like Rock has, sometimes it happens. Sometimes it's fun to boo people, otherwise there would be no need for heels and faces. We haven't been able to boo Rock as fans for years without being a lone voice in the crowd. Tonight all the factors combined to make it easy to boo Rock. He's leaving to go film another movie, he's been a face forever, he was facing an opponent who despite being a heel is also an imposing and amazing physical specimen worthy of respect, and the last few weeks really have seemed to verge on Rock burning out crowds a bit. Tomorrow night I'm sure Brock will get booed, and when Rock comes back people will cheer him like mad, but for one night the fans seemed to have some fun turning WWE on its ear. Just take a deep breath folks, and we'll all get through this together.

The problem with your theory is that unlike the lead up to the past 2 WM's Rock wasn't getting any heel heat whatsoever even though eveyone knew he wasn't staying long. So it's probably just NY cheering the strong heel thing.

As I said before, I personally hope that they have Rock cut a promo on Raw where he basically turns on the crowd for dissing him at WM and SM. Even though he chose to come back himself when he didn't have to. He could mention the money he's making now and he won't kill his body for the sake of the fans anymore. This way when he comes back he can then be SUPER RUDER ROCK! THE MILLION DOLLAR ROCK BABY!
If Brock still has the Title then there is a ready made feud on his comeback.

The Rock switching to rudo heel mode last night was great in my view. I've really missed it. Let him turn it up a notch cause Rock Heel promos are killer and his ring work has improved so much since his last heel run that he would be a great heel bastard.

Plus when it comes to putting people over you can always count on one man. I still can't believe how clean that finish was though.

For what it's worth:

The sports restaurant where I watched the PPV was extremely full -- there's generally a full house for wrestling, but this was even denser than usual.

The crowd was heavily behind HBK. They were heavily behind Angle (though still oohing and aahing at Mysterio's gymnastics, as they should have been). And they were HEAVILY behind Lesnar, with huge pops for the F5 teases/hit at the end, and a hearty "Rocky Sucks" after the pinball.

Me? I have _more_ respect for the Rock after this match. He put over a newcomer to the uppercard (and, thus, a Potential Threat to His Spot) clean as a whistle; he shifted gears in mid-match to acknowledge the crowd's reaction and mood; he made Lesnar's moveset and finisher look lethal. One F5 = one dead topcarder. THAT'S the mark of a professional.

(And before anyone comments -- no, that doesn't make HHH unprofessional. HHH bumped and bled heavily for a guy who hadn't wrestled in four years, gave up a three-count, then did something that was in-character for him. Punking out HBK made plenty of sense -- it sent Shawn off-camera again for a while, before too many people start "HBK is back and maybe he'll come back FULL-TIME" rumors, and kept heel heat on the guy who's on TV every week.)

The shocking part shouldn't be the Long Island crowd booing Flex, the shocking part should be a reaction of any type from the Long Island fans.

Wow, everyone's reading way too much into this. Maybe they booed Rock for the same reason they booed him against Hogan - because they like Brock. Maybe they booed him because it's not uncommon knowledge that he's about to abandon the WWE to make more shitty movies again. (And I know how it benefits the WWE, but most people don't realize that.)

I'm not deluded enough to blame it on racism (Must've started watching *after* the Booker T match then, huh?), and I'm not niave enough to believe that people all at once finally realized that Rocky's vastly overrated.

Why is everyone getting so upset about Rocky getting booed? Booing a wrestler isn't really a sign of disrespect. Cheers or boos, the wrestler is getting over! The only way that The Rock would have been disrespected is if the crowd had sat on their hands. I'm guessing he went back stage and he and Brock high fived over having the crowd in the palms of their hands like that.

What's with the anger over the crowd's behavior on my native Long Island ("the unhappiest place on earth")? They can do what they want. They're not playing a role. They bought their tickets and they can do whatever they want and they've been encouraged to do whatever they want over the years, so I honestly cannot fathom how you can criticize their reactions. The live crowds are how WWE knows what it should do, Brock's forced push aside. I think Rock got booed because Rock is stale and boring and predictable. And kudos to the crowd for picking up on that -- Dubuque wouldn't have, I bet. Now, if Rock were sticking around, Vince might wake up and say, "Hey, they're telling me Rock is stale and boring and predictable -- and they're right! Maybe he should heel it up for a while until they get back on his side." But he's off to Hollywood, so it's a moot point, I guess.

The real point is don't ever criticize a crowd for what they choose to cheer and boo. They're what matters, not you sitting at home.

I think they booed Rock/cheered Brock because they are excited by Lesnar's look and his push. While a lot of people who post here (and I'm not necessarily excluded) don't like this mega push for the rookie, the crowd reaction is the natural result. This is especially so when he's not being played as a cheap or cowardly heel like Angle or Jericho in thier title runs, but as a monster heel. Look at the cheers Taker got when he was a heel or that Austin got when he was a monsterish heel (in his first incarnation as SCSA against Bret).

Having watched the match again I have to say that Rock switching to heel mode was just great. His facials and mannerisms were so badass.

Please Vince, as much as I like face Rock, Heel Rock is even better.

By the way guys I think that the reason why he hasn't been turned earlier is all due to the money brought in by face Rocks merchandise sales. With the current state of WWE finances it's preety understandable why they have not turned him.

Hopefully while he's gone there will be one or two big breakout babyface stars so the Rock character can finally return to its original purpose.

RUDO DICKHEAD BASTARD HEEL!

I for one thank the crowd.
