Yes, indeed folks...the Blue Jays have managed to turn it around. After starting the season 7-15, the Jays are now up to 29-24, including 19 wins in May so far! (after playing Chicago on Tuesday)

Let's look at the line-up...because honestly, I'm just starting to get into this team again after they lost my interest after the two World Series wins and then years of ineptitude... Stats are from bluejays.ca

The Batting
LF: Shannon Stewart [.305, 3 HR, 25 RBI, 1 SB/2 CS]
CF: Vernon Wells [.299, 11 HR, 49 RBI, 1 SB/1 CS]
RF: Frank Catalanotto [.312, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 0 SB/1 CS]
Utility OF: Reed Johnson [.370, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 0 SB/2 CS]
1B: Carlos Delgado [.335, 15 HR, 51 RBI]
2B: Orlando Hudson [.290, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 4 SB/2 CS]
SS: Chris Woodward [.262, 2 HR, 19 RBI]
3B: Injured; One of the utilitymen will fill in.
Utility: Dave Berg [.306, 2 HR, 9 RBI]
Utility: Mike Bordick [.278, 0 HR, 17 RBI, 2 SB/0 CS]
Utility: Howie Clark [rookie, hasn't played yet]
C: Greg Myers [.330, 5 HR, 19 RBI, 0 SB/1 CS]
C: Tom Wilson [.304, 3 HR, 16 RBI]
DH: Josh Phelps [.259, 7 HR, 23 RBI, 0 SB/1 CS]

The Pitching
RHP Doug Davis [2-3, 5.54, 10K; 6 starts]
RHP Kelvim Escobar [2-1, 6.04, 4 saves/1 blown]
RHP Roy Halladay [6-2, 4.00, 64 K, 12 starts]
LHP Mark Hendrickson [4-4, 5.31, 28 K, 11 starts]
RHP Cory Lidle [8-2, 4.42, 50 K, 11 starts]
RHP Aquilino Lopez [0-1, 4.74]
LHP Trever Miller [0-0, 5.94, 1 blown save]
RHP Cliff Politte [1-3, 3.91, 8 saves/3 blown]
LHP Tanyon Sturze [4-4, 5.90, 28 K; 8 starts]
RHP Jeff Tam [0-2, 4.28, 1 save/1 blown]
RHP Pete Walker [1-1, 6.18, 15 K; 4 starts]
RHP Jeff Towers [rookie, 1-0]

The Injured
3B Eric Hinske [.232, 2 HR, 21 RBI, 2 SB/1 CB]
RHP Bob File [Hasn't played yet this year]
LHP Doug Creek [0-0, 3.29, 1 blown save]

Overall, things look good. The pitching is bad, but with the majority of regular batters north of .300, the hitting is superb. The AL East is notoriously difficult to win (or even get the wild card), so the Jays have their work cut out for them. But with the world scared of SARS, they're just playing good baseball and hoping for the best.

As a longtime Jays fan, nothing would please me more than to see Toronto back on top. I'm crossing my fingers that this latest streak isn't just a streak, and the Jays are really for real. I think the offence can keep it up, but the pitching is still questionable after Lidle and Halladay.

BTW....Greg Myers for All-Star catcher in the American league. Who else is there? Posada? Ramon Hernandez?

Classic Jim Powers pump fist thread. The day of a celebrating congratulatory thread on something they repay you by losing 8-0 lol... But to be fair it was 2-0 going into the 9th.

They are having a nice little run but baseball is such a marathon I don't think it can last

But having 2 players already hitting 50 RBIs and 2 catchers who alternate evenly both hitting over 300 is pretty freaky.

Their pitching is going to let them down, especially in the bull pen.

I'd say Vernon Wells is the surprise of the year. For the money they're spending on Delgado, he'd better produce. But the entire outfield is guys that weren't really supposed to be stars...and they've turned out pretty solid.

Sure, they lost 8-0. But that means they're 29-25. Oh! My! God! Only 4 over .500! I want them to do well, but I'm still worried they'll pull the same crap they usually do...lose repeatedly.

But here's hoping they won't.

The stat comparisons are interesting. AL stats only.

Only guys with > 90 At bats included...

Avg.
----
1. Myers
2. Wilson
3. Hernandez
4. Pierzynski
5. G. Gil
6. Varitek
9. Posada

HR
---
1. Posada
2. Varitek
3. Hernandez
4. Myers
5. Mayne
Pierzynski
7. Wilson

RBI
---
1. Posada
2. Molina
3. Varitek
Pierzynski
5. Hernandez
6. Myers
9. Wilson

Fielding PCT.
---------------
1. Molina
B. Inge
Wilson
4. Hernandez
8. Posada
10. Pierzynski
11. Varitek
16. Myers

My vote would have to be with Hernandez right now, but the differences between them are fairly small...

Considering Myers and Wilson are splitting the duties, it is amazing that their HR and RBI numbers are in the top 10 in the AL.

I just hope that 1 or both can keep it up over the long haul. They are the guys protecting Delgado in the order. If they faulter, he will start being pitched around more and more...

Look at run production, the most important stat = Runs + RBIs.

Posada = 66
Varitek = 48
Hernandez = 42
Pierzynski = 40
Myers = 39
Wilson = 32.

Posada is way better than any of the others. He is in a league of his own.

Taken as a team, the Blue Jays guys are doing great, but neither player in a platoon gets in the All-Star game.

The latest news is that the Jays are going to a four-man staff of Halladay, Lidle, Escobar and Hendrickson. *crosses fingers*

Ohh I don't know about that BigBad. Doing a 4 man rotation already in just early June is a great way to burn your pitchers out by the stretch run.

But man the Jays just swept the Red Sox and racked up a ton of runs. They are looking very good... Unfortunately if the Jays are close to the Yanks (and some extent BoSox), the Yanks will just pluck an Ace from another team and put him in their 4th spot in the rotation or grab a top player from another team and put them in the 8th spot in the batting lineup. Blue Jays just won't be able to do that.

The 4-man could work as long as the offense keeps going...who was their 5 starter, was he that bad or are they waiting or an AAA pitcher to be ready in the next month or something, I'm assuming a trade is out of the question.

I still can't believe that the Jays allowed Chris Carpenter to get away.....did someone not tell the Jays GM that pitching is at a premium right now? Geez......

Keeping someone around who has a propensity for arm troubles isn't all that wise. As of right now, Carpenter is expected to come back in August. He was placed on the 60 day DL on March 27th while rehabbing from shoulder surgery.

Matt Morris came off of arm troubles and became one of the best starters in the league. Obviously, the Cards are hoping for the same to happen with Carpenter. And as a Cards fan, I hope they are right.

Morris wasn't having arm surgeries EVERY year. That being said, it's a nice pickup for the Cards, I just don't think it will pay off even close to how Morris did.
