They talked about this briefly on the news last night. Also mentioned were "Ice, Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice and "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit.

But they also said Primus was the 22nd worst artist of all time. The fuckers.

HAW... I do love that they threw in some John Mayer though. Bleh.

And anytime anyone can get me to think of Eddie Murphy singing "Party All The Time" while in that studio with Superfreak... man, I thank them.

Sounds of Silence is on the list?? What? How is that one of the WORST songs of all time?
Obla Di Obla Da is a happy little tune with a great melody. What were these people thinking?
And how can ya hate on Celine like that?

The people who come up with these lists always come off as elitists. They always pick songs that are specific to a time frame, or just like to pick a song by an artist that is fun to make fun of. "You people down there who buy CDs are just so stupid! And we are going to make a list to tell you how stupid you are! And we are gonna put it on VH1, because we can't come up with any creative programming!!"

They can make fun of Bobby McFerrin all they want, but he is probably the greatest vocalist alive today. He probably could have made tons of pop hits, but he chose to be an innovator. Oh yeah, and "Don't worry, be happy" aint that bad!!

I just don't see what makes these BAD songs. I think I've liked 'em all at one time or another. (Except for Madonna's "American Life" -is that where she rhymes "Pilates" with "Latte"?) These songs were mostly top ten hits--some #1. Obviously millions bought and listened to them.

I think I have to agree with ShotGunShep.*

Elitist Snobs.

I don't think "We Built this City" is even Starship's worst song from that era. Did they forget Mannequin soundtrack special "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now?"

--OK, my take, now.

Agree:

--“Achy Breaky Heart”. God, what an awful song. And it was played to death for years after it came out. Not so much anymore, fortunately.

--“She Bangs”. I can't stand that song, either.

--The rap version of “I'll Be Missing You” was awful, a disgrace to the original song.

Disagree:

--“Ice Ice Baby”. I didn't care for it, but I didn't vehemently hate it, either.

--“Kokomo”. What the fuck?!?

--“From a Distance”. It got overplayed at my elementary school, and it was hokey, but you gotta consider there was a war going on at the time, man.

--“You're My Inspiration”. Lay the hell off of Chicago.

--“Broken Wings”. Hey, I happen to love that song. So I'm an '80s geek, so kill me.

--“Sunglasses at Night”. I love that song, too.

--“The Final Countdown”. It's built up the tension for so many NBA playoff games that everyone should lay the heck off of this song.

--“The Sounds of Silence”. Lay the fuck off of this song.

--“My Heart Will Go On”. It was very annoying when the radio stations played the damn thing to death during the Titanic craze. But it's actually a pretty good song, a dramatic song that speaks of the depth of this girl's love for this guy.

Anyway... anyone else have comments to make?

What's funny is that about 10 or so of these are on VH1's list of best one-hit wonders.

Sunglasses at Night DEFINED 80s music IMO. Awesome song, and I found new love for it by it being on one of the GTA:VC radio stations.

Yeah, they really should have made it the worst "Singles" of all time. There are certainly worse songs on almost all those albums from which the song is picked.

Vanilla Ice had some inane songs, but Ice Ice Baby is awesome. I'm no fan of Clay Aiken, but his new single is miles worse than Invisible.

Oh, and Achy Breaky Heart is a great guilty pleasure for me, so screw the snobs at Blender.

I think I have at least 17 of these songs on mix CDs, so blah to Blender. Couldn't a list of the Worst Fifty Songs of All Time be more easily compiled by just writing down the tracklisting of any four Slipknot albums?

I don't think a lot of these songs are the greatest ever written, but most of them were catchy and I still sing along with them.

I mean Two Princes? We Didn't Start the Fire? Dancing on the Ceiling? Hell, I sing like an idiot when I'm Too Sexy comes on.

Not much there that's "that bad" at all. Basically, it's Idiots making a list.

I can't WAIT to read their justification on The Sounds of Silence...

EDIT: This will also get the VH1 Treatment.

"The End"!? Really? I have no problem personally being a snob and pointing out the worst in music, but how the hell do you justify that getting on the list?

(Although, I seem to remember The Doors got on their "Worst Artists of All Time" list as well. Ray Manzarek must owe one of the editors money or something.)

EDIT: For the record, songs on the list I'll confess to liking:

48. Beatles: Ob-La-Di,Ob-La-Da; 1968
44. Meat Loaf: I'd Do Anything For You [But I Wont Do That]; 1993
43. Uncle Kraker: Follow Me
42. Simon and Garfunkel: The Sounds of Silence; 1965
41. Billy Joel: We Didn’t Start the Fire; 1989
38. Rednex: Cotton Eye Joe; 1995 (*There's a weird bit of nostalgia connected to this one, in my own defense)
31. Crash Test Dummies: MMM MMM MMM MMM; 1994
26. The Doors: The End, 1967
23. Corey Hart: Sunglasses At Night; 1984
16. 4 Non Blondes: Whats Up?; 1993
15. The Rembrandts: I'll Be There For You; 1995
12. The Beach Boys: Kokomo; 1988
7. McFerrin: Don’t Worry Be Happy; 1988
6. Huey Lewis and the News: The Heart of Rock and Roll; 1984

(edited by OlFuzzyBastard on 21.4.04 1349)

EDIT: Somehow I included Clay Aiken on the list of songs I actually like. *That* was an oversight, I assure you.

""[The word] liberal derives from the Latin 'liberalis' - of freedom, befitting the free. Synonyms are progressive, broad-minded, unprejudiced and generous; while antonyms include reactionary, narrow-minded, intolerant and stingy. Accordingly, a political liberal is an open-minded person who considers all the arguments before drawing conclusions. A conservative, on the other hand, clings to one position and sees no reason to entertain diverse viewpoints because he already has his mind made up. Are mainstream media 'liberal'? I certainly hope so."

Well, really there's two types of bad songs. There's the type that makes your ears bleed every time it's on the radio and you can't reach for the channel button fast enough...the other falls under the category of songs we KNOW are bad but we sing along anyway, cause it's fun.

We Built This City makes my ears bleed. Sunglasses At Night is fun to sing along with. There's the difference.

And just in passing on the same note, what's more fun than Cotton Eye Joe?

Wasn't "The Final Countdown" pushed by MTV for about two years before it finally cracked the top ten?

Not surprised "Courtesy of..." is on there, since it's fashionable to hate songs like that, also not surprised that none of the crappy chick rock songs weren't on there.

"Take these hands they are my own they aren't yours they are my own my hands are mine they aren't yours..." or Sarah McLaughlan or any of that garbage.
