It was bound to happen sooner or later

http://espn.go.com/nba/news/2003/0707/1577624.html

PHOENIX -- Portland Trail Blazers guard Damon Stoudamire was arrested on drug charges at Tucson International Airport, airport officials confirmed Monday.

Stoudamire was arrested as he attempted to board a plane on Thursday, said airport spokeswoman Paula Winn.

She had no other details about the incident early Monday, but a police report was expected to be filed later in the day.

Stoudamire has been arrested twice previously on drug charges, both stemming from marijuana.

In November, Stoudamire and teammate Rasheed Wallace were passengers in a vehicle that was stopped for speeding on a highway outside Chehalis, Wash., following a game with Seattle. A search of the vehicle turned up a small amount of marijuana, police said.

Stoudamire, Wallace and driver Ed Smith of Portland were cited and released. All three pleaded innocent to the charges.

Stoudamire agreed to attend drug and alcohol counseling and stay out of legal trouble for the next year to have misdemeanor charges against him dropped.

It was not immediately clear how Stoudamire's latest arrest would affect that agreement.

Calls to Stoudamire's attorney, Steve Houze, were not returned. The Trail Blazers also did not return calls requesting comment.

Earlier in 2002, Stoudamire was charged with a felony after police found a large bag of marijuana in his home while responding to a burglar alarm. A judge declared the search illegal, but prosecutors are appealing.

Stoudamire was drafted from Arizona in 1995 by the Toronto Raptors, where he was Rookie of the Year in 1996. He was traded to the Trail Blazers in 1998.

Stoudamire is attending summer school at the University of Arizona and working toward a degree in media arts, with a minor in sports broadcasting. Stoudamire, who left school two terms short of graduation in 1995, promised his mother he would eventually get his degree, according to a June 27 article in The Portland Tribune.

It was bound to happen sooner or later

Actually, Dan alerted me to the Kobe story yesterday In This Very Chat. I went to ESPN.com this morning to dig up more details on it and I stumbled across the Stoudamire story.

It's funny how the reaction I've seen to the Kobe story (on TV and whatnot) so far has been all "OMG, NO WAY!". But when you bring up Stoudamire (who's name I'm tired of typing already) it's "Damn, again?!"

Actually, the shock is it had been a few months since any of the Blazers had ended up in the (Col.) Klink. Rasheed Wallace or Bonzi Wells should probably do something before training camp to make sure they are in prime felonious shape for next season.

If Vince would just hire Dick Dastardly and Muttly and tell them to Catch the Pigeon, it would draw at least an 8 rating.

The best part of all of this?

Stoudamire got busted at the metal detector, when his ounce and a half of weed, WRAPPED IN ALUMINUM FOIL, set off the walk-through detector. He dropped the foil-wrapped pot and rolling papers into the coin tray and security alerted local authorities.

Over land, over air, at home... where can't this Steve Howe wannabe get in trouble?

Ah.

They don't make criminals like they used to, do they? Who the hell wraps pot in aluminum foil right before walking through a metal detector? Was he hoping to blind the security guys with the shine before they had a chance to see why the detector started going off? However, I must give him some credit for trying to play it off like it wasn't important by dropping it in plain sight of the authorities. Either he's incredibly gutsy, or incredibly stupid. Most likely the latter.

Considering one of his previous marijuana offenses came when authorities responded to what turned out to be a false burglar alarm at his house, and then found his stash, I'd guess the latter on that split myself.

This guy was actually something in his first few years of his career in Toronto. Pretty marketable with the whole Mighty Mouse gimmick. Is there something in Portlands water that brings out the idiot in people?

This guy has to be an idiot. Why was he taking his pot to the airport and trying to get on the plane. He is a millionaire, how hard is it to spend some money wherever he is landing and get more pot there.

NBC wouldn't care one bit if the finals were a ratings disaster, since they won't be broadcasting the NBA next year, ABC and ESPN will.
