Spike TV has given the green-light for a television series based on Marvel's Blade, the network's first original scripted series.
"I'm very happy that Spike picked up the show," executive producer David Goyer told The Continuum Tuesday afternoon. "From the first moment we met with Doug Herzog, we knew that it would be a perfect match.

Goyer, who wrote all three Blade films and directed Blade: Trinity, is joined on the series by Geoff Johns, with whom he co-wrote the television pilot movie, which was shot last month in Vancouver. The pilot was directed by Peter O'Fallon.
Here's how Spike TV describes the series:
"Blade focuses on Marvel's eponymous immortal warrior fighting a shadowy underworld of vampires who want to destroy the human race. The title character is a half-man, half-vampire who uses his superhuman powers and skills to fearlessly battle the demonic creatures of the night in a blood-drenched crusade to prevent the ascendance of vampires over mankind."
The TV series will maintain continuity from the movie trilogy but will bring Blade into a new storyline with new characters.
Kirk "Sticky" Jones stars as Blade. Jones first became widely known as "Sticky Fingaz," the front man for the hip-hop group Onyx. He later appeared and starred in a number of feature films including Clockers, Dead Presidents and Flight of the Phoenix. Most recently, Jones appeared regularly on FX's Over There and The Shield.
No Snipes, no problem, sez I. This could be a major sleeper hit and should likely give comic geeks their mindless action buzz that they may not get through shows like Smallville.

|  #5 Posted on 5.2.06 0358.53 | Instant Rating: 6.80 | Snipes thought he was pretty much intentionally buried by the third movie, despite the franchise being "his" as it was produced in part by his movie label and initially brought into existence by his lobbying. He saw the scripting and directorial choices made as a conscious effort to try and replace him as the star of the show with the Nightstalkers. Looking back on it, there has rarely been as blatant an attempt at spin-off creation than Trinity, so I guess Snipes has a point. He still comes across as an asshole about it, though.

| #7 Posted on 5.2.06 2137.48 | Instant Rating: 2.19 | I do understand Snipes side of it in that the third movie sucked. And the Nightstalkers were a complete and utter joke which failed miserably. They were clearly trying to sweep Blade aside and make the Nightstalkers the star. And so here we are, a TV series spin-off and no Nightstalkers. The only thing I found interesting about Blade 3 was when Blade verbally dissects and tears about the Nightstalkers, and everything he says about them is basically true.
Years ago there was talk about Snipes voicing an animated series on HBO done in the vain of the Spawn animated series. |
