No miracles coming down the pipe...

Owners break off talks, mass player dump ahead? (sportsillustrated.cnn.com)

    ...

"The situation is about as dire as dire can be," commissioner Paul Tagliabue said.

    ...

The breakdown of talks left intact, for now, a salary cap of $94.5 million. The two sides had hoped to add $10 million to $15 million to the 2006 salary cap. Without the additional room, some teams could be forced into wholesale cuts to get beneath the cap by midnight. Free agency starts Friday.

Without an agreement, 2006 will be the last season with a salary cap -- under the current contract, 2007 is scheduled to be an uncapped year.

    ...

But the two sides remain far apart -- according to Upshaw, the union wants a little over 60 percent of the league's total revenue, the owners are offering 56.2 percent.

"I won't come down," Upshaw said Thursday. "The players know that. Only the owners can make a proposal."
Looks like even the best of sports organizations are prone to their share of labor troubles.

Basically, what this means is that many fans this afternoon will be checking the newswires repeatedly this afternoon while biting their fingers off and praying that their top players won't have to be cut just to make this year's cap (the rules changes that go along with an uncapped year make it much more difficult to restructure deals).

Of course, as a Bucs fan, I'll be included in that group, praying that we don't have to let go of Brooks or Rice. Who are you guys praying your team won't have to lose?

It's good to see that the WWE isn't backing away from Batista or Cena. There's still some questions lingering over a few of the draft moves they either made or didn't make (Jericho being a prime example), but the stage is set for a solid run to Summerslam that may send the indicator down. The longer Triple H stays away is also a plus...

The teams have until 10:00 PM to make their cuts, so there's little point in checking the newswires this afternoon. Especially since there's still a faint hope that a deal can be reached by 9:59 PM or so. REALLY faint hope, mind you...

I still can't believe its come to this. I remember hearing around this time last year about the CBA coming up for renewal and everyone being all "no need to worry. The NFL is insanely profitable and no one would want to screw that up." Oops.

Only nine hours left...

Kansas City cuts four defensive veterans: Eric Warfield, Dexter McCleon, Shawn Barber, and Gary Stills.

I'm just waiting for the shoes to drop as far as Tampa goes.

The only surprise for me there is Barber, and it's not really that big of one. He wasn't the same after the knee surgery two seasons ago. In fact, I'm not even sure if he played last season.

Word coming out at this point that the NFL has delayed the start of free agency to Monday, meaning, I believe that teams now have until Sunday night to get under the cap (or for a last, last-minute deal to be struck)

Good news. Hopefully they'll be able to get a deal done (resulting in a higher salary cap and less of this stress about veteran players).

And not only that, but everyone who was cut today can be uncut, believe it or not.

Well, it now looks like Black Sunday is upon us, with Kerry Collins serving to be the first victim (sportsillustrated.cnn.com).

There's still about 43 minutes left for them to make a deal, but I doubt anything will happen. Should be interesting to watch not only who else is cut, but which teams won't have cap space to make any significant signings (or how cheaply those that do have cap space will be able to pick up talent).

There's no deadline like No Deadline.

NFL, union agree to delay free agency 72 hours

And Collins is off waivers and back with the Raiders (sports.espn.go.com)

For now, anyway.

These negotiations are madness. I need to stop trying to follow this like its the end of the world or something.

NFL Owners approve deal, 30-2

I think the players still have to ratify this, but that appears to be a certianity. Free agency is pushed back another day to Friday 12:01am.

Yay.

This is the season that never ends...

I'm glad this is done, but man, Friday is going to be insane, with all the moves that I'm sure have been planned and and just waiting for free agency to begin. (I for one look forward to welcoming LeCharles Bentley to the Eagles).

Well getting rid of Zook was a start. Cam Cleeland is history, Rick Williams needs velcro, Josh Reed of LSU (WR) would be a nice draft pick, Kyle Turley takes the Kevin Greene path into the WWF this offseason.
