I saw this in my NBC 4 o'clock news, but this link has a blurb on it at the bottom.

The bill has a provision to prohibit technology that skips commercials during a DVD or televised movie; opponents, including advocacy group Public Knowledge, say the provision would make it a crime to fast-forward through a commercial.

In criticizing the bill last month, Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), R-Ariz., said: "Do we really expect to throw people in jail in 2004 for behavior they've been engaged in for more than a quarter century?"

On the news report on TV, a person from the video industry says that this law is great and will help keep piracy of DVDs down.

WTF?

This is just stupid. I have one DVD, I can't remember which (I have 400+) that won't let you use the title, menu, ff, rewind, or POWER button while the ads are playing.

Yes, I can not turn off my machine if I want to. "This button is not usable now"

That really pissed me off. Stop worked, and luckily it wasn't allowed to start at that point, and when I hit play, it jumped to the menu.

This doesn't have to happen. Contact your representative via fax, email, or snail mail.

Willful ignorance of science is not commendable. Refusing to learn the difference between a credible source and a shill is criminally stupid.

Maybe I'm totally missing the issue here, but how is making commercials unskippable supposed to make stop people from pirating DVDs?

The WWE already does this. You can usually search through the WWE previews, but during the "Don't try this at home" bit, you cannot skip it. You can't even fast forward.

It is REALLY annoying, although I'm usually buoyed by the fact that it doesn't happen much on mainstream DVD's. Looks like I might get much more depressed here soon.

WADSWORTH: The games up, Scarlet. There are no more bullets left in that gun.
SCARLET: Oh, come on, you don't think I'm gonna fall for that old trick?
WADSWORTH: It's not a trick. There was one shot at Mr. Boddy in the study. Two for the chandelier, two at the lounge door, and one for the singing telegram.
SCARLET:That's not six.
WADSWORTH: One plus two plus two plus one.
SCARLET:Nuh, uh. There was only one shot that got the chandelier. That's one plus two plus ONE plus one.
WADSWORTH: Even if you are right, that would be one plus one plus two plus one, not one plus TWO plus one plus one.
SCARLET:(thinking) Okay, fine. One plus two plus one--(angered) Shut up!

More like outbid Wal-mart, GM or Coca-Cola for that vote, as they see the potential marketings ops here. Two years til the next election, people will forget by then.

You know, if you step back and think about this for a second. It's really sad something like this is even being considered. But sad don't live next door to surprising.

See, tht I can understand. If it came down to brass tacks in a lawsuit or something they can explicitly point out that their warnings were there and they HAD to be viewed.

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

Yeah and the same thing with the FBI warning of death. Can't skip it on a lot of movies.
The idea is pretty stupid and won't do anything to cut down piracy. Like bootleg copies couldn't just erase the commercials if they wanted too.

Advance-screening word-of-mouth is pretty poisonous. But, Jackie Earle Haley, woop woop.
