It was an iffy year for commercials this year (though a great year for trailers, which we'll get to later). We start with the big winner:

-Troy Polamalu is Mean Joe Green. Polamalu re-enacting the classic Coke commercial was cool factor enough, but having the Coke Zero guys try to call infringement only to get their asses handed to them was the funniest moment of the night. Just awesome.

Other personal faves include:

-Doritos Crystal Ball. Started off a little blah, but the payoff nutshot got a good laugh out of the room.
-Jason Statham Drives Audi. A lot of stuff hearkening to "The Transporter" made this commercial a lot of fun.
-Conan Pimps Bud Light. Swedish-style, of course. This...was...hilarious.
-Teleflora Boxed Flowers. I certainly didn't expect to see a box of foul-mouthed flowers, so this one gets a thumbs-up for going in an unexpected direction, if nothing else.
-Careerbuilder.com's "It may be time". Repetition is funny and the sudden punching of the koala in glasses was such a curveball that it got a big laugh.

It was also a solid year for movie trailers. For the record, they included:

-"Duplicity". Looks like a decent Clive Owen/Julia Roberts romp.
-"G.I. JOE~!" I went NUTS when I saw this, though it took me a bit to recognize it. August can't come soon enough!
-"Angels & Demons". This already looks MUCH better than "The Da Vinci Code", which is not surprising, considering A&D was the better book.
-"Year One". This looks like it'll be a winner because of the Michael Cera factor.
-"Fast & Furious". And, of course, the sequel that no one asked for.
-"Land of the Lost". This looked WAY too much like the average Will Ferrell movie for my tastes. And I typically like the average Will Ferrell movie.
-"Star Trek". Looks really similar to the first trailer, but still excited to see this one, nonetheless.
-"Up". It's the next Pixar movie, which is all I need to hear. I'm there.
-"Monsters vs. Aliens". A resounding "eh" from me, even with the notable Stephen Colbert presence.
-"Race to Witch Mountain". The Rock is a taxi driver that happens to pick up two super-powered alien kids. This one looks surprisingly decent.
-"Transformer: Revenge of the Fallen". The trailer here makes it look like this will be a much darker movie than the first one. I'm ok with that and I loved that first movie, so I'm in on this one.

Overall, not as good as recent years. But still, some gems to be found.

Awful, awful year. But the koala ad was the best by a WIDE margin, followed (IMO) by the Priceline Shatner ad.

EDIT: Whoops, forgot Alec Baldwin for Hulu. It goes Koala, Hulu, Wide Margin, Priceline.

It is the policy of the documentary crew to remain true observers and not interfere with its subjects.

That's not saying much as the Priceline ad is a couple weeks old.

We rewound the G.I. Joe and Transformer trailers a few times. That got us pretty revved up.

I'm pretty much right there with It's False. Coke Zero was awesome, and Conan's Bud Light commercial was good.

The Audi commercial made no sense to me. Seemed like a montage of unrelated chases, ending with Statham in his "Transporter" role for no apparent reason.

Our local NBC affiliate jury rigged in some high def local commercials this year (the first that have ever aired in this market). This included one for a credit union that features flabby guys in white T-shirts that say "BILL" on them.

Not only did we get to see these hideous creatures in high definition...we got to see them in WET T-SHIRTS.

Yes. That was special.

Oh...and JJD's Nalley/Philly dip (from the food thread) was great.

Yeah, CareerBuilder.com. I wrote on Twitter that I'm not sure whether we really needed remakes of "The Land of the Lost" and "Escape From Witch Mountain", but we'll see.

It's already been said that the entire plotline of the book has been chucked because Brown wrote it as a prequel and they wanted to do a sequel. So what you saw has nothing to do with the book other than the title.

While the switch from Cena to RVD should alleviate some complaints, the inevitability of the belt's return to Cena (note where Summerslam is this year) and the poor initial showing by the new ECW are enough to keep the indicator where it is for now. The pieces are in place, though, especially on RAW, for improvements to be made to the IWC's psyche in the near future.

The koala bear had coffee!

I also thought the GoDaddy shower ad was a little bit clever - "this is my fifth shower today."

I don't see how that's any different than remakes of Transformers (and a second one at that) and G. I. Joe, but nobody seems to be complaining about that.

Alright, I will complain about that as well. I actually have more interest in seeing either of the two movies I mentioned than either of the two you mentioned.

Fair enough then.

For the record I'll take Witch Mountain and GI Joe, but pass on Land of the Lost and Transformers.

Star Trek wins for movie trailers - I want to see that the minute it comes out, and I'm ambivalent about Star Trek at best. Year One looks pretty good, too. Everything else looks fairly meh.

As far as regular commercials, Hulu is probably the winner for me, but I loves me some Alec Baldwin. The commercial for (and the one starring) Conan O'Brien were both pretty nice, too.

(Oh, and every commercial with the cast of "Heroes" made me embarrassed that I ever watched the show.)

Danica Patrick really doesn't care about credibility, eh?

Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!
Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death!

The Hulu ad was the clear winner for me. "What are you gonna do - turn off your TV and your computer? *evil laughter*"

Favorites were Career Builder, Hulu, and Polamalu channeling Mean Joe Green.

I also had this strange desire to put "Feelin' Alright" on a loop after the game.

That right there spells out the problem I had with that trailer, and the artistic direction they seem to be taking the movie. Other than the half second glimpse of Snake Eyes vs Storm Shadow's business suit and the title card, nothing about it screamed GI JOE. Take those away, and you had a generic action movie trailer. Not a good sign.

Transformers:RotF on the other hand, delivered the promise of bigger, badder robots and higher stakes. Definitely got me psyched up. Of course, they had an advantage over GI JOE to begin with, being both a sequel and a more easily adapted toy property.

The Cash4Gold commercial with Hammer and Ed McMahon got a good size laugh out of me. I also enjoyed the "Need a dog?" commercial with the warthog, rhino, etc.

Every Heroes commercial made me want to see Heroes canceled on the spot Especially the singing one. Tho oddly enough, I felt that one worked for Chuck.

I kind of want to know what GoDaddy.com is, but I don't want to go there to find out.

There was a Diet Pepsi Max commercial in the pregame that was pretty good. "I just crushed the hull of a nuclear sub."

Really? Cuz I'd be pretty surprised/impressed if I got MC Hammer AND Ed McMahon in any of my local commercials.

EDIT: Also, I can't be the only one that marked like crazy for the MacGruber/PepsGruber/MacGyver commercial.

I thought it was a commercial for something else and just a parody of something, but Ed crying over the golden toilet was pretty funny.

The two funniest for us were the careerbuilder.com spot (Hey Dummy), and the "What if we stopped having Bud Light at every meeting?" commercial. That was so funny. There was also one more (either careerbuilder or monster) that had a guy in a nice office with a deer head on the wall, and the poor guy on the other side of the wall with the rest of the deer that cracked us up. The Pepsi Max with the guys getting hurt and all saying, "I'm good!"
